💬 An Interview with James W. Parker, Chief Safety Officer
“When we started Tahoe Jet Boats, our question was simple: Why would anyone put a child behind a propeller-driven speedboat when there is a no-propeller option? It’s not like you can’t wake foil, surf, wakeboard, waterski, or tube behind our surf-ready jet boats—and their deep-V hull design is exactly what the U.S. Coast Guard uses.”
“Does the company you’re considering even mention safety—or is their website just another megacorp tourism directory, a bland booking calendar and an automatic confirmation email, devoid of anything but price comparisons? Do they offer or recommend cancellation and rescue insurance as a reasonable, prudent safeguard—or is that conversation simply ignored? Do they explain which parts of the lake are best to avoid daily rough water, wind exposure, and the congestion created by first-time peer-to-peer jet ski and boat renters bent on going full throttle past your 10-year-old who’s 50 yards behind your boat trying to learn how to waterski?
These are serious issues. Road ragers abound in South Lake Tahoe. They don’t care on the interstate, and they care even less on the lake—because law enforcement can’t be everywhere at once.
Imagine it: it’s your first day driving a peer-to-peer rental boat with a horn that doesn’t work, and your child is about to get run over by someone going 40 mph while fumbling with Spotify to pull up Yacht Rock. Or picture this: you’re floating off Monkey Rock when a storm slams into the 100-foot cliff and sends four-foot waves over the gunwales, knocking your 72-year-old grandmother—who has a bad knee and no upper body strength—into the water. Does your peer-to-peer rental have a patented rear swim deck that meets the water with no propellers, allowing you to maneuver safely to the rescue? Or do you have to leave the helm, shut off the motor while your boat gets blown into the rocks, and help three adults try to hoist her over the propeller zone? Worse yet, you panic and keep the motors running—but in the chaos, you forget to shift into neutral, leaving the propeller spinning in a do-or-die Russian Roulette. What will you do—20 seconds to impact? Are you experienced enough to handle that?
Do you know how long it takes for that thunderstorm to reach you from Placerville? Are you even looking up at the weather approaching?”
“Before you book, ask yourself: Did this company operate during the Red Flag warnings leading up to the 2025 fatalities? Because we didn’t—and we never will.”
“Hundreds of propeller-strike injuries happen every year in this country. Several every summer on Lake Tahoe. That’s why we invested in jet propulsion—because the price of convenience should never be a limb or a life.” https://tahoejetboats.com/lake-tahoe-boat-hire-safety/
