“What once was old is new again.” On the Indiana Northeastern Railroad — where well-cared-for EMD locomotives continue to serve as our workhorses — we live by that idea. Today, it’s reflected in the return of both a customer and the classic boxcar.

Once a common sight on freight trains carrying everything from grain to finished automobiles, boxcars have largely given way to more specialized equipment. But in Angola, that trend has reversed.

A newly completed project with Univertical has restored direct boxcar service to their facility, eliminating the need for transloading by truck from Chicago. The Angola location had been offline from rail for nearly 15 years when rising copper prices made full boxcar shipments impractical. Today, with stabilized markets, increased volumes, and rising trucking costs, rail once again makes strong economic sense.

Working together, the Indiana Northeastern Railroad and Univertical LLC removed an outdated spur rendered unusable by past plant reconfiguration and constructed a new track, complete with a boxcar ramp and security fencing, bringing reliable, door-to-door rail service back to the site. Sometimes progress isn’t about something new, but by recognizing when the old ways are ready to roll again.

Thousands of families lined the right-of-way to welcome Santa, and our crews helped deliver gifts, joy, and a little old-fashioned railroad magic to every town we touched. Seeing platforms fill with smiles and hearing children cheer as the Christmas Train rolled in remind us why these traditions matter and how the communities help shape the heart of our line. Thanks to Cameron Health for powering this event and to the Fort Wayne Railroad for organizing it on our system.

Our season of crossing upgrades and improvements is nearly over. Take note if you commute in Angola.

UPCOMING ROAD CLOSURE

We've been notified by the Indiana Northeastern Railroad Company about an upcoming repair to take place within the railroad crossing on W. Mill Street, specifically between Superior Street and Wohlert Street. The extent of work includes to fix portion of the rail and smooth the crossing.

The work is scheduled to begin on November 10th at 8:00 AM. They anticipate the work will take two full working days to complete.

Please be aware of potential traffic disruptions and delays in this area while the work is being completed. Drive safely and consider alternative routes if possible.

Quackenbush Road in Reading, Michigan is now home to a brand-new, cantilevered two-way signal system, which is a major upgrade from the former passive crossing that was once only marked by yield signs. With guidance from MDOT, we’ve improved roadway safety by making the crossing more visible to drivers cresting either hill.

We work closely with the states we operate in to design and install new crossing infrastructure once a roadway has been identified as a candidate for upgrades. This installation includes half-roadway gates and more than 1,500 feet of new circuitry, a classic Western-Cullen-Hayes mechanical bell and a state-of-the-art Alstom XP-4 electronics system, making for a blend of tradition and modern technology.

The proximity of Camp Chief Little Turtle makes Railroad Camp a natural collaboration between neighbors. Events like these educate campers from as far away as Virginia, Texas, and Alabama, as well as from Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, and are hosted by educators, law enforcement officials, and railroaders from around the Midwest. Thanks to all of the fellow sponsors for helping bring the technical and industrial trades to these young adults.

All aboard for Edon Days! 🛤️🎡 The Ice Cream Train is rolling into town on Friday, August 8 — just in time for the town’s biggest summer celebration! We're returning a regular passenger train ride to town for the first time with the Fort Wayne Railroad for a family-friendly, diesel-powered trip with complimentary ice cream from Edon Dairy Treat and Kuster's Dairy Food.

🎟 Tickets go on sale July 17 at 6:00 PM
🕕 Departure times: 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM
🕐 Trip length: 1-hour roundtrip between Edon and Hamilton

Kids age 3 and under ride free in Deluxe Coach (if not occupying a seat).
