Pictured is US Route 82 eastbound approaching the Cloudcroft Tunnel on the southern cliff of Fresnal Creek. The Cloudcroft Tunnel opened during 1949 as a major realignment of New Mexico State Route 83 from High Rolls west towards the Alamogordo area. Originally New Mexico State Route 83 followed the northern bank of Fresnal Creek on what is now Fresnal Creek Road and Section Road to La Luz. The earlier alignment of New Mexico State Route 83 largely followed the same general corridor of the Cloud-Climbing Railroad between High Rolls-La Luz. During 1963 the Cloudcroft Tunnel would become part of US Route 82 when the highway was extended to Las Cruces.
