Insurance costs continue to be one of the biggest challenges for small carriers — but the right strategies, safety data, and industry partnerships can make a major difference.

This recent article from Overdrive Magazine featuring our member, Oberman Logistics, highlights how proactive safety management and operational transparency helped create competition among underwriters and reduce overall insurance costs.

At NASTC, helping small carriers control expenses and stay competitive is what we do every day - from fuel discounts and compliance support to insurance resources and industry partnerships designed to help members succeed.

Read the full article here: https://www.overdriveonline.com/small-fleet-champ/podcast/15825397/trucking-insurance-how-to-make-underwriters-fight-for-your-business

An Overdrive 2025 Small Fleet Champ's flatbed biz makes good on growth goals with a transparent promise to owner-operators: 15% of the gross for costs, no insurance chargebacks. "We had companies fighting over our business" this year, he said, with similarly transparent ELD data engagement.

🚨Big Changes Coming from FMCSA – Introducing the MOTUS Platform 🚨

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is rolling out a new system called MOTUS (Modernized Oversight & Tracking Unified System) and it’s going to impact how carriers interact with compliance, safety data, and enforcement.

So what does this mean for YOU as a carrier?

âś… More modern, streamlined interface
âś… Improved access to safety & compliance data
âś… Faster communication with FMCSA
âś… A shift toward more digital oversight and transparency

This is part of FMCSA’s push to modernize outdated systems and bring everything into one centralized platform.

Our Take at NASTC: Change like this can be good, but only if you’re prepared. Systems like MOTUS will likely make it easier for regulators to spot issues, which means compliance matters more than ever.

That’s where we come in.

At NASTC, we help carriers stay ahead with:
✔️ Compliance support & CSA guidance
✔️ Safety programs & monitoring
✔️ Training through our NEST program
✔️ Tools to keep your operation running clean and efficient

Don’t wait until changes catch you off guard—stay informed and stay compliant. Want help navigating FMCSA changes? Reach out to us today.

🚨 REMINDER: BLITZ WEEK KICKS OFF TODAY (May 12–14, 2026) 🚨

CVSA International Roadcheck is a 72-hour enforcement window where inspection odds spike significantly.

Expect heavy focus on:
✔️ Hours of Service (HOS)
✔️ ELD accuracy & log compliance
✔️ Securement, brakes, tires, lights

This is one of the strictest enforcement periods of the year, especially in high-enforcement states like Indiana, Kansas, and Missouri.

Bottom line: if your logs or equipment aren’t tight, this is when it gets exposed.

Stay compliant. Stay ready.

🚨 BLITZ WEEK 2026: YOUR ODDS OF BEING INSPECTED JUST WENT UP 🚨

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance International Roadcheck (Blitz Week) is set for: May 12–14, 2026. For 72 hours, enforcement will be everywhere and this isn’t business as usual.

During last year’s Roadcheck, about 1 in 5 drivers (21%) were inspected. That’s significantly higher than other enforcement events. Translation: Your chances of getting pulled in are real, not rare.

This year, expect a strong focus on:
✔️ Hours of Service (HOS)
✔️ False logs & ELD manipulation
✔️ Personal conveyance misuse
✔️ “Ghost driver” logins

They’re not just checking logs, they’re looking for patterns and fraud.

States That Are TOUGHEST on HOS Violations: Based on recent data highlighted by Overdrive Magazine, these states are leading the pack in catching hours violations:

📍 Indiana – #1, issuing 1 in 4 violations for HOS
📍 Kansas, Oregon, South Dakota – Heavy enforcement focus
📍 Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi – Consistently high violation rates
📍 Iowa & Colorado – Also among the toughest

If you’re running through these states during Blitz Week… you better be tight. This year’s vehicle focus = cargo securement

But inspectors will still hit the basics hard:
✔️ Brakes
✔️ Tires
✔️ Lights
✔️ Load securement

NASTC’s Take: Blitz Week isn’t about bad luck, it exposes bad habits. If your logs are questionable or your truck isn’t inspection-ready, this is when it costs you.

At NASTC, we help carriers stay ahead with:
âś… Compliance & safety programs
âś… Logbook & HOS guidance
âś… CSA monitoring
âś… Training through NEST

Bottom line: This is the most aggressive enforcement window of the year. If you’re not prepared, you’re gambling.
