There’s nothing quite like seeing Hoover Dam from the Colorado River. 🌊⚡

Rising 726 feet above its foundation, Hoover Dam was built during the Great Depression, with construction beginning in 1931 and the massive project completed ahead of schedule in the 1930s. More than 4.4 million cubic yards of concrete went into the dam and its associated structures, creating Lake Mead and forever changing the Colorado River. (National Park Service)

🏜️ Want to see the base of Hoover Dam by jet ski? The stretch of Black Canyon between Willow Beach and Hoover Dam has special seasonal rules. Personal watercraft are permitted Tuesday through Saturday during the summer boating season, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Jet skis are prohibited in this section every Sunday and Monday year-round, and are also prohibited Tuesday–Saturday outside the summer season. (National Park Service)

🪨 Ever wondered about the white line around Lake Mead?

That’s the famous “bathtub ring” — mineral deposits left on the canyon walls from when Lake Mead’s water level was much higher. At its peak in 1983, the lake reached about 1,225 feet—roughly 150 feet higher than today.

With the Colorado River facing long-term water challenges, conservation efforts across the Southwest continue to play an important role in protecting Lake Mead’s water supply. 🌊🏜️

Hidden beneath the waters of Lake Mead is a piece of American history. Before the Hoover Dam was completed, a concrete batch plant operated along the Colorado River to supply the massive amounts of concrete needed for the project. As Lake Mead filled behind the dam beginning in 1935, many of those construction sites—including the old batch plant—were submerged beneath the rising water.

Today, thousands of boaters cruise above a place where one of the greatest engineering projects in U.S. history came to life. 🌊🏗️
