Idaho has many rules governing the burial of large animals, and if you have one that has passed away, you need to be aware of the requirements. According to the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, if you are going to bury an animal on your property, you have to comply with the following:
04. Burial. Dead animals shall be buried to such a depth that no part of the dead animal shall be nearer than three (3) feet to the natural surface of the ground. Every part of the dead animal shall be covered with at least three (3) feet of earth.
The location of a burial site shall be:
a. At least three hundred (300) feet from any wells, surface water intake structures, and public or private drinking water supply lakes or springs.
b. At least three hundred (300) feet from any existing residences.
c. At least fifty (50) feet from property lines.
d. At least one hundred (100) feet from public roadways.
e. At least two hundred (200) feet from any body of surface water such as a river, stream, lake, pond, intermittent stream, or sinkhole.
f. Burial sites shall not be located in low-lying areas subject to flooding, or in areas with a high water table where the seasonal high water level may contact the burial pit.
And you are required to bury or dispose of the animal within 72 hours of becoming aware of the death. If you don't have enough room on your property, or aren't able to bury the animal for any reason, your only other reasonable option is to haul it to the landfill in Fighting Creek, and that's where I can help. I have a trailer that was built many years ago by Earl Magnus for that very purpose. Rates vary depending on your location, so give me a call if you find yourself in need. (208)640-0378
