Happy Flag Day, American Samoa 🌊

American Samoa Flag Day is more than just a date. It is a week that brings communities together to celebrate heritage, culture, and history.

Each year on April 17, the people of American Samoa commemorate the raising of the American flag on Tutuila in 1900, officially declaring American sovereignty over Tutuila and Aunu’u. From that moment, a tradition began that continues to unite villages, families, and generations.

The celebrations begin with a special Flag Day church service, followed by evenings of Fa’afiafiaga in Fagatogo. Dance, song, and storytelling bring the islands to life, while the U.S. Navy and Marine Bands add to the spirit of the week. The excitement builds with the Tu’uga Fautasi longboat races across Pago Harbor before the celebration reaches its peak.

At dawn on April 17, the flag is raised in Fagatogo, followed by the official parade and closing ceremony at Veterans Stadium.

Wishing the people of American Samoa a meaningful and joyful Flag Day as you celebrate your history, culture, and community.
