Portraits of Texans by Russell Lee during the Great Depression. The Farm Security Administration tasked Lee to take images documenting American life during the New Deal era. Lee’ photojournalism for the FSA between 1936-1942 is what he is best known for, unsurprisingly so! He later moved to Austin and led a successful career.

The Texas Prison Rodeo, Huntsville’s legendary event that ran from 1931 to 1986. Inmates competed in rodeo events, earned pay for their skills, and drew crowds of up to 100,000 spectators at its peak. These striking images by Bill Kennedy capture the grit, skill, and spectacle that made the rodeo a phenomenon. Kennedy is an Austin-based photographer and started capturing the rodeo in the 1970s. 🤠

Some fun San Antonio basketball history ahead of Game 2 today. Did you know one of the greatest players in NBA history got his start in the Alamo City?

Before becoming a four-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer, Shaquille O’Neal starred at Cole High School on Fort Sam Houston. After transferring to Cole, Shaq led the Cougars to a perfect 36–0 season and the 3A State Championship in 1989. His numbers were impressive, with an average of 32 points, 26 rebounds, and 8 blocks per game.

Hopefully, Shaq is rooting for our Spurs! Vamos!

Native Texan, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, is known as one of the greatest athletes in history. Babe excelled in numerous sports including golf, basketball, and track and field. She was an Olympic gold medalist, 10 time LPGA champion and the first woman on a Wheaties box! Incredible legacy in sports history!

In 1898 Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders were ordered to Tampa, Florida, from San Antonio to take part in the forthcoming invasion of Cuba as part of the Spanish-American War. Teddy recruited his soldiers at the Menger Bar and they were the First United States Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The order came on May 30, 1898 which was 128 years ago.
