Fall in Yosemite. As days grow shorter and cooler, deciduous trees perform a biological magic act—they change
color. Chlorophyll, the compound responsible for photosynthesis, is the reason leaves are
green. In preparation for winter, when there is not enough sunlight and water to make energy,
the tree’s production of chlorophyll slows, then stops. Any chlorophyll left in the leaves
degrades, revealing other pigments and their related colors, including: xanthopyll (yellow),
beta-carotene (orange), and anthocyanin (red).
Curiously, anthocyanins only appear after chlorophyll begins to break down. The reason for this
is not entirely clear. It’s possible that it protects the leaves long enough for trees to reabsorb
vital nutrients, or that it’s a deterrent for insect pests (in nature, red often signals danger).
Whatever the reason for this riot of color, it’s like catnip for a photographer, and I’ve spent
many an overcast or rainy day entranced by the tones, textures, and light bouncing through the
autumnal forests.
