USDOT proposes drone restrictions for rail, infrastructure sites

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) on Wednesday (May 6, 2026) issued a proposed rule through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that would allow companies — including railroads — to apply for restrictions on drone operations around their critical infrastructure sites.

Comments on the proposed rule can be submitted through July 5. The rule would establish a two-tier restriction on drone operations in eligible critical infrastructure zones. One requires drone operators to meet specific safety and security standards to operate in the zones, and another would bar any drone usage in the zones unless authorized by the FAA and the sponsoring agency.

If approved, the FAA would create a website on which companies could apply for drone restrictions on their sites. Applicants must demonstrate that drone restriction is necessary for aviation safety, national security or protection of people and property. Railroads that use drones in their own operations, for example, could apply for restrictions at their sites to ensure there are no outside drones in the airspace.

Approved restricted zones would have defined boundaries, and violators could face civil or criminal penalties, USDOT officials said in a press release.

Proposed eligible site categories include transportation systems, industrial manufacturing and chemical facilities, commercial sites, public utilities, public services, technology hubs and government facilities.

This action would implement section 2209, of the FAA Extension, Safety and Security Act of 2016, by establishing a process for operators and proprietors of certain fixed site facilities to request and maintain an unmanned aircraft flight restriction. The proposal also establishes requirements for...

*** GRLW 3752 UPDATE ***

For those of you who have been wondering or have inquired, 1957-built EMD GP9 GRLW 3752 has been undergoing extensive rebuild work following the unfortunate December 19, 2025, grade crossing collision with a garbage truck in Williamston. We are pleased to report that the heavy repairs were wrapped up last week and the locomotive is now being blasted and primed to receive a fresh coat of GRLW green over the next two weeks.

Here a few photos of the before and after regarding the damage and necessary repairs as well as a couple of the blast and prime work in progress today. We are hopeful to return this 69-year old workhorse to service by the first of June… just four months ahead of Greenville & Western’s 20th Anniversary.

Special recognition goes to the dedicated employees and local contractors who have gone to great lengths to restore this locomotive to its original condition largely by custom manufacturing the unique plates and parts that are no longer available as off the shelf items from modern locomotive builders.

Stay tuned for some additional progress photos as well as finished product photos as this project nears completion. We are excited to see the finished product coming together so nicely and can’t wait to get this unit back out on the road!

Greenville & Western Railway employee Aiden Knight had the honor of spotting the first load of engineered lumber at Eastern Engineered Wood Products facility in Belton today.

While construction on the facility continues, EEWP has begun transferring materials stored at their temporary Anderson County site over to Belton and have reached a point in construction where they can begin storing rail-delivered product on-site at Belton!

So exciting to see the first car be placed here, especially knowing it’s just the beginning of big things to come. An early Christmas gift for EEWP and GRLW. 🎄
