Cessna 150 vs. Cessna 152... What’s the Difference?

At first glance, a Cessna 150 and 152 can look almost identical. Both are simple, economical two-seat airplanes that have trained generations of pilots, but there are a few important differences.

Cessna 150:
-Typically powered by the 100 HP Continental O-200
-Maximum gross weight of up to 1,600 lbs on later models
-Up to 40 degrees of flaps
-Generally a little less expensive to purchase
-Simple, lightweight, and very economical to operate
-Produced in several different versions, so early and late 150s can be surprisingly different airplanes

Cessna 152:
-Introduced as the successor to the 150
-Powered by the 110 HP Lycoming O-235
-Higher 1,670 lb maximum gross weight
-Maximum flap extension reduced to 30 degrees
-28-volt electrical system
-A little more power and payload capability
-Generally commands a premium over a comparable 150

So which one is better?

For a first airplane, time builder, or flight school, either can be a great choice.

The 150 can offer a lot of airplane for the money and is hard to beat when your priority is keeping acquisition and operating costs down.

The 152 gives you a slightly newer design, another 10 horsepower, and some additional gross weight, which can definitely be appreciated with two people onboard or on a hot summer day.

When you’re shopping for 40 year-old airplanes, condition, maintenance history, engine health, and useful load are usually much more important than whether the cowling says 150 or 152.

Which one are you taking home? The 150 or the 152?

A Cessna 172 or a Cessna 182. Which one makes sense for your first airplane? ✈️

For many pilots, the Cessna 172 is where it all starts. It is predictable, forgiving, relatively economical to operate, and familiar to pilots, instructors, and mechanics almost everywhere.

The Cessna 182 Skylane shares a lot of that same DNA. Both are four-seat, high-wing Cessnas with similar handling characteristics, great visibility, straightforward systems, and a huge support network. For a pilot coming out of training in a 172, stepping into a 182 can feel very familiar.

But the difference is capability.

A typical 172 offers around 180 HP, 120 to 125 knots of cruise speed, and roughly 850 to 900 pounds of useful load.

A 182 steps that up to around 230 HP, 140 to 145 knots of cruise speed, and often 1,000 pounds or more of useful load, depending on the aircraft.

That extra performance matters when you start carrying passengers, baggage, and fuel. The 182 also brings a constant-speed propeller, so there is a little more airplane to manage.

For local flying, time building, training, and weekend trips, the 172 is hard to beat. If you see yourself regularly traveling with a few passengers and baggage, the 182 gives you more room to grow without stepping too far away from the airplane you already know.

For a first-time owner, there is no universal right answer. The question is whether you need the efficiency and simplicity of the 172 or the additional capability of the 182.
