Our legacy isn’t only measured in years—it’s measured in the lives it has touched. We hope that you are one of them and will share your story with us.

For Stewart Spinks, GMU is where he learned to fly and where a lifelong passion for aviation took hold. That passion shows as Stewart tells his story.

For nearly 100 years, GMU has been a place of first flights and first solos, homecomings and departures, careers launched and dreams discovered. Generations have looked through the fence, climbed into an airplane, worked on the field or simply stopped to watch an aircraft lift into the sky.

Every one of those experiences is the story of this airport.
As we approach GMU’s 100th anniversary in 2028, we want to capture those memories and the people behind them.

What does GMU mean to you?

Foreign Object Debris (FOD) is an loose object that can damage planes or injure people. It is a daily task and everyone at the airport helps keep our areas clean. Once a year we shut the airport down offering our community to help. It is a unique opportunity to walk on the runway and network.

Drones are used for many things and adding a Part 107 license to your PPL is not hard. We recently used drones to spray w**d control along hard to reach areas and along our banks. Flying drones near the airport is prohibited unless you get permission. **dcontrol

Life is not about the destination. It is about the journey and the people you meet along the way. Our GMU community is the BEST. For National Aviation Day, we would like to share a story.

Rob Traynham recently shared how, as a six-year-old boy, he eagerly waited for his dad to arrive on an Eastern Airlines flight while sitting on a fence at GMU. Mesmerized by the spinning propellors and the glow of the cockpit lights as the plane taxied to a stop right in front of him, Rob knew that day that he was going to fly!

Shortly after this, his family moved next to a Southern Airways pilot who exchanged washing his 1955 T-Bird for rides in his Piper Tri-Pacer. At 15 years old, he worked for Ruby and Warren Gwinn at Thermal Belt Aviation in exchange for flight training. He built up hours by ferrying airplanes to NC. Those hours earned him an Air Force scholarship with pilot training spot after college.

Rob returned to GMU after six years in the AF to fly for Liberty Corp. and later managed their flight department. Rob also started and managed flight operations for Michelin and later Nissan. The story continues through another generation because all his boys also learned to fly at GMU. His youngest flew A-10s for twelve years and is now a Captain for Delta.

“So, hopefully you can see that GMU has played an incredible, pivotal, life-changing role in my life. The airport and its people enabled and invested in a little boy's dream and made it come true. I am forever indebted.”

No, Rob. We are indebted to you! It is because of you and our shared history here that we all become a stronger airport community.

For nearly 100 years, GMU has been more than airplanes and runways. WE are the people who learned here, worked here, taught here, dreamed here, and helped others along the way. We are a community.

Tell us your story. Help us tell the history of GMU through the people who lived it.
What did GMU mean to you? Who do you remember? How did this airport become part of your life?
