Calling on our Big Rapids area friends to Shoe Us the Love!

Please help us spread the word and make this special "Drive-in & Drop-off" event a success. Between Montcalm and Ionia counties, we have received 979 pairs of shoes so far that will benefit those in need. We're pretty sure Mecosta County will not let us down.

We will be at the Big Rapids TSC parking lot on Sunday, June 14th from 12:00-3:00. We will gladly unload your vehicle, so dig out those shoes that have been taking up space in your closets and Shoe Us the Love!

Last Friday evening, Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion volunteers came together to celebrate another successful year of their service. What an amazing group these volunteers are and we are certainly honored to have the dedication, compassion, and devotion they have for these programs and the children and adults they serve.

This year was a special year for the Senior Companion Program. EightCAP has hosted this wonderful program for 25 years and we still have the very first volunteer, Helen Chappell, who enrolled into this program 25 years ago. Helen wore the tiara with pride. We also have a Foster Grandparent, Joan Tobias, who is celebrating 27 years this year. Amazing women!

Honored guest, other than the volunteers, were Rose Jones who was the very first Foster Grandparent/Senior Companion Project Director. She was instrumental in bringing the Senior Companion Program into fruition. Rose was joined by Teresa Kruzkowski who was the third Volunteer Coordinator for the program. Unfortunately, Donna Wyczesany, the first Volunteer Coordinator could not attend and was missed. The Senior Companion Program has had three Project Directors; Rose Jones, Lori Johnson and Stephanie Rockafellow. It has also had three Volunteer Coordinators; Donna Wyczesany, Tammie Dann and Teresa Kruzkowski with Tammie returning in 2018.

We were fortunate to have Judy Emmons, a representative for State Representative Pat Outman and Fletcher Wernholm from Congressman John Moolenaar's office join us and hand out certificates to each volunteer. Their support for the programs has been on-going for many years, and we appreciate their continued support and kindness to the volunteers.

It was a wonderful evening, and we couldn't be happier or prouder with the group of volunteers we have throughout four counties. They are gems who can make a child or adult's day shine like a diamond. Thank you, Volunteers, for everything you do to make a difference in this world! Your kindness does not go unnoticed!

Thank you, WGLM 106.3, for becoming a partner for a drive-thru drop-off site for our "Shoe Us the Love" project! This event will take place on Sunday, May 31st, 12:00-5:00 pm on WGLM's front lawn, 9181 S. Greenville Rd., Greenville. WGLM also has a collection box inside the station, along with many other partners listed on the flyer.

All you need to do is bring your unused shoes, boots, cleats, etc. to this event and we do the unloading for you. We can accept gently worn, used or new items with intact soles. We cannot accept wet or moldy shoes. This is a great opportunity for those who are having yard sales to pack up those leftover shoes and drop them off.

Your contribution is greatly appreciated and will benefit the volunteers of the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs!

The Senior Companion volunteers and a few Foster Grandparents met for their in-service training last Friday at our Turk Lake Office.

We had Nicole Donnellon and Nurse Sara from Heartland Hospice enlighten us on hospice services, dementia, and boundaries. It was very refreshing to hear about someone who was on Hospice that received the services for over six years. So many people believe Hospice means they are going to pass quickly, which is not necessarily true for many individuals who receive this service.

We also enjoyed having Elizabeth Kreager from Disability Advocates bring in many different pieces of equipment and share the different services this important agency can provide. It's amazing to see and hear about the resources that help seniors.

It's always a great day with this group of caring individuals.

The Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs are conducting a "Shoe Drive" to raise funds to supplement the programs. All shoes collected will be picked up on June 30th, reconditioned and given to those in need. At this time, we have several drop-off locations throughout the counties listed on the flyer.
If you would like to become a drop-off location or make a donation, please contact Stephanie Rockafellow at [email protected] or call (616) 754-9315, x5.
Thank you for your continued support!

Foster Grandparents attended their in-service meeting yesterday at the Sheridan VFW Hall to learn about how they can keep themselves safe and/or help others in emergency situations.
Thank you to Dean Dykstra from Save-a-Life CPR. Dean provided easy, no-nonsense information that certainly enlightened many of the volunteers and created many questions. The volunteers were also able to perform CPR on the practice baby and adult manikin.
They were also informed of senior services available for them in their area to make things easier for them at home. Thank you to Judy Seigert of Disability Advocates for sharing this information & bringing in different gadgets for the volunteers to experience the handiness of each item.
It was a very good day to focus on volunteer health for those who are always helping children. Great job, Volunteers!
