Miles and points time!

For Brisbane, we stayed 2 nights at the Hyatt Regency Brisbane. We used a free night certificate earned from staying at 5 different Hyatt brands and transferred 12,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt for the second night. The hotel was fine, but not what I expect from a Hyatt Regency.

The hotel was next to Queen Street Mall, which was interesting. One night we were walking back to the hotel and passed an open air Wendy's where a group of teenagers was having a full blown food fight that almost hit us. Sydney felt polished and refined. Brisbane felt a little more punk rock.

From Brisbane, we flew to Hamilton Island. We didn't use any miles for our flights within Australia, but booked them with our American Express Platinum card to earn 5 points per dollar. We also didn't use points for our hotel. Since we don't have a hotel card that earns better rewards, we used our Chase Sapphire Preferred to earn 2 points per dollar. We chose the Reef View Hotel because breakfast was included and figured that would save some money. Unfortunately, the breakfast was one of the most disappointing parts of the stay.

The views from our room were incredible, and Hamilton Island itself was beautiful. If we ever return, we'd skip the hotel and rent a holiday house or apartment instead. Thankfully, the unique birds, koalas, wallabies, and access to the Great Barrier Reef more than made up for the breakfast.

Matt here! It is our last day on Hamilton Island! The island is beautiful, and the weather has been great minus a few rain showers yesterday.
We got to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, see more wallabies than we could count, see joeys in koala pouches, and see more rainbow lorikeets. The sulfur crested cockatoos still scare me with their loud calls, but they are awesome birds.
Paula's only complaint was that there were more toddlers and crying babies than she expected. I tried to convince her the screaming was just the cockatoos, but she didn't believe me. πŸ˜‚
I can now officially say I swam with sharks... reef sharks! Paula stayed much closer to the edge of the reef and let me explore.
Seeing the Great Barrier Reef was a bucket list experience and one we will never forget. πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ πŸ¦˜πŸ¨

You can definitely see some coral bleaching, but still amazing! It was our first time using the GoPro, and glad we purchased it!

A little like Hawaii, a little like Costa Rica, and a whole lotta Hamilton Island! Hamilton Island is a car free (service cars only) island, but you can rent golf carts. We finally drove on the left side of the road in a golf cart and so far Matt has only driven on the wrong side twice! The scariest moment is when a wallaby jumped and we almost hit it or it almost hit us! Matt slammed on the golf cart brakes to avoid it. We also learned they have a preschool and a school on the island if anyone is interested. Matt is not a fan of the sulphur crested cockatoos fearing one will land on him! I love the Bush stone curlew as they look like tiny dinosaurs.

Today we left Uluru and headed to Brisbane.

Matt really wanted to experience the Outback, and I've wanted to see Uluru (Ayers Rock) since I was a teenager. Looking back, I'm glad we went. While Uluru wasn't as visually dramatic to us as some of the landscapes we've seen in Arizona and Utah, its cultural significance to the Anangu people and its importance to Australia made it worth experiencing. We also liked the white bark trees.

Crocodile Dundee never mentioned how expensive the outback is, but I'm sure he slept under the stars where the fear of snakes and pesky flies would be too much for us. It os expensive to get supplies and food across a large continent.

We think the Cairns area and Daintree Rainforest would have been a better fit for our travel style, especially since we love wildlife. If you visit Uluru, do not expect kangaroos. Our bus driver worked there for 30 years and never saw a kangaroo. She joked the "watch for kangaroo" signs was for the tourists.

As for Ayers Rock Resort, the biggest pro was how smoothly everything runs. We stayed at Desert Garden Inn. The biggest con? We wouldn''t pay extra for a "Desert View" room again. Ours was more of a "Road, bus, car, car, bus, and occasional desert" view, and the room wasn't very clean nor was it ready at check in time and we had to ask again after sitting in the lobby. We did like they had laundry so we could have some clean clothes! We also wish we had rented a car for a little more freedom.

Last night we were completely exhausted and decided we'd let our internal clocks decide whether we were getting up for the Kata Tjuta sunrise. My internal clock said yes, because I woke up at 4:56 a.m. and we quickly packed our bags and hopped on the bus.

The sunrise was beautiful, and afterward we tackled the Walpa Gorge hike. The desert scenery was wonderful, but my ankles definitely felt every step!

While there, we met a lovely couple from Adelaide on a road trip. The funny part? They haven't seen a single kangaroo either. At this point, I'm convinced kangaroos are Australia's version of Bigfoot. Everyone says they're everywhere, yet here we are with zero sightings. Had I known they were this elusive, I would have planned a stop where we were guaranteed to see wild ones!

Other than not seeing much wildlife besides birds and having an older gentleman cough on me for most of the bus ride, our trip is going great. We'll share our thoughts on Uluru later tonight.

For now, Matt wants to paint an Australian animal, and I've suggested anything except a kangaroo since I'm still not entirely convinced they're real. πŸ˜‚

Today was a 9.2 mile walking day in Australia's Red Centre, and we are absolutely exhausted! πŸ₯΅ We visited Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) and watched the sunset transform the giant sandstone monolith into shades of reds and orange. I even got Matt to take a picture with the fiag!

Along the way we spotted a diamond dove, a noisy miner, a magpie, lots of rabbits, and even a few camels. Fun fact: camels aren't native to Australia. They were brought here in the 1800s to help transport supplies across the Outback. When they were no longer needed, many were released, and Australia now has the world's largest wild camel population!

Between seeing the Milky Way last night and watching the sunset over Uluru tonight, the Red Centre gave us some pretty memorable views. Now it's time for an early night and some much needed rest before tomorrow's adventure.

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Today was a travel day. Matt wanted to go to the Outback and said he finally feels like he's in Australia. I'll finally feel like I'm in Australia when I see a kangaroo! 🦘 For an animal that outnumbers people nearly 2 to 1, these creatures have been elusive so far.
Before the moon came up tonight, I was able to see the Milky Way stretching across the sky, a true bucket list moment for me. ✨
