I had the opportunity to fly for a work conference this week. I departed on Monday from Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton and traveled to the Macon County Airport near Franklin, NC. I cannot say enough positive things about the facility, staff, and pilots/users of this airport. This is a “must see” location for reasonable fuel and parking in Western NC. The staff at MaconAir, especially “Hawk” was a pleasure to deal with.

Jess and I had the opportunity to fly to the New River Valley of Virginia to pick up Jackson from Boy’s State at Radford University this past weekend. Upon landing at Virginia Tech/Montgomery Airport we were greeted on the ramp with our rental from Enterprise. Before we could load our bags, the line crew had us tied down and we were on our way. Top notch service from this FBO. If you are in the area, you have to make this a stop. First night parking waived with fuel purchase as well for our 1953 Bonanza.

We arrived at our hotel in Radford in about 15 minutes. The Hotel Highlander is situated right on campus and contains a coffee shop as well as a full service roof top restaurant and bar. The hotel is now a part of the Hilton family, which was a bonus for us.

It’s rare to have such great service at all points on a trip. The New River Valley area did not disappoint. We look forward to stopping in again soon- maybe the next time our Wolfpack comes to town to take on the Hokies:).

WTW- This past Friday evening we set off for the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our arrival after sunset into SHD was picture perfect- as was the reception from the line crew. They had our rental from Budget waiting and we were gone within ten minutes of our parking- if not less.

We traveled into town for dinner at Jimmy Madison’s (we highly recommend the rooftop) before turning in. The next day we entered Shenandoah National Park and traveled Skyline Drive towards Hwy 211 and Luray. A few Apple Cider Donuts and distillery/winery tours later we were ready to call it a day.

The departure experience at SHD on Sunday morning was just as pleasant. If you haven’t been in to that beautiful airport- we highly recommend!

Thanks to Ana at Dulles ATC for arranging a wonderfully informative tour of the ATC Tower at Dulles for our family while we were on vacation in the DC area. Our 16 year old may very well now have another career path to investigate. If you ever get the opportunity, we highly recommend!

WTW- On the way home in N2187D from Asheville to Edenton at 7500 feet last Friday. RDU is in the distance.

The self serve fuel (price and accessibility) National rental car and ramp crew at Signature were all top notch. Parked overnight on the ramp for $40- which isn’t too bad for the convenience of the field. I will definitely be back.

WTW- a flashback to two weeks ago on the way home from Greensboro in the D35 Bonanza. Just NW of Triangle North Airport with Lake Gaston in the distance.

If you are the pilot of a piston single, I highly recommend Koury Aviation. They met me on the ramp, fees are practically non-existent, fuel is reasonable, and they even voluntarily shuttled me to my conference hotel just across the street. I will definitely be back.

A little night flight around Northeastern Regional Airport to make sure the old girl and the pilot are both good to go in the dark. As always, the 1953 Beechcraft Bonanza did not disappoint.

There have been several early mornings in the last few weeks as our Bonanza was wrapping up the annual inspection at Voyager Aviation at KAVC and getting the VFR Transponder Certification at Bay Avionics at KSFQ. Both of these businesses understand the nuances of “senior” airplanes while also looking out is little guys in the General Aviation world. The old girl is now ready to go!

Welcome to “Flying With Jesh”. Josh and Jessica married in 2018 and have traveled extensively via General Aviation. Throughout many of their journeys, they have often wished there was a way to chronicle their experiences, share tips and suggestions for pilots and their families relevant to specific airports and destinations, and highlight some of the exceptional service and people they encounter along the way. After several years of talk, we finally decided the time was right to share our experiences with the general aviation communities, and anyone else brave enough to come along for the ride.

When not flying, Josh works as an educational administrator in the North Carolina Public School System. Jessica is a mother of three and works full time as a marketing and public relations professional in Tidewater Virginia.
