A domestic dispute in Tennessee turned into an interstate rescue after two truck drivers spotted a wanted car and refused to let it pass.
An Amber Alert had gone out around 12:45 p.m. for 2-year-old Cael Whitehead, who had been taken by his father, 23-year-old Austin Whitehead, following a domestic disturbance.
Jim Lowe, a driver for Johnny Morris Farms of Hillsboro, Tennessee, and his co-driver had just heard the alert when they noticed a 2003 teal Pontiac Grand Am matching the description in the lane beside them on Interstate 24 in Marion County.
After checking the license plate against the alert, Lowe said he and his co-driver eased in front of the car and called out to other trucks nearby to help box it in.
“We just kind of eased up and got in front of him and then hollered at a couple more trucks ahead of us to ease over into the slow lane and slow down,” Lowe said.
Other drivers on the interstate quickly joined in, surrounding the car so it could not slip past.
The car was just a few miles from the Georgia state line when it was boxed in, according to Kristin Kern, a public information officer with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
“The way they boxed the car in so he could not get by them, it’s really amazing,” Kern said, adding that the truckers “definitely saved that child.”
Police arrived and took Whitehead into custody. Cael was found safe and unharmed.
Lowe later told 11 Alive News he was mostly relieved for the toddler.
“I am glad he got to go home and sleep in his bed last night,” he said. “I know he was probably a little bit scared there.”
Lowe and the other drivers went back to their routes once police took over.
