This aftercooler was screaming for attention… and unfortunately, it had been ignored for far too long. 👀

Aftercoolers aren’t one of those “out of sight, out of mind” components. They play a huge role in engine performance, efficiency, and longevity — and when service intervals get skipped, the buildup, corrosion, and internal damage can get ugly fast.

What starts as “it’s still running fine” can quickly turn into:

Not every service call can be handled at the dock. Sometimes the job calls for going all in. ⚙️

Briar and Ritchie have been hard at work tackling a full 6 year / 1000 hour service on this CAT C18 — and this one came into the shop in a BIG way. Engine and transmission were completely removed from the vessel so every component could be properly inspected and serviced the right way.

The transmission has been sent out for complete disassembly and inspection, while the team works through the rest of the service process here in-house. No shortcuts, no guessing — just thorough work designed to keep this boat reliable when it matters most.

Big jobs like this are a reminder that preventative maintenance isn’t just about checking boxes. It’s about protecting your investment, catching problems before they become failures, and keeping you on the water instead of tied to the dock.

Remember that 37’ Evans in Tilghman Island we told you about earlier this week? The one that came in for routine service and turned into a turbo replacement after Nash found an exhaust leak? Well… he wasn’t done yet. 👀

While going through the engine further, Nash found the aftercooler was seriously lacking in the service department — and unfortunately, it had reached the point where replacement was the best option.

It’s a good reminder that skipping or delaying critical maintenance items can turn a manageable service into a much bigger repair bill down the road. Aftercoolers play a huge role in engine performance and longevity, and when they’re neglected, the engine usually lets you know eventually.

This is exactly why we preach thorough inspections every chance we get. Sometimes the problems customers call us for are only part of the story. 🔧⚓

Just because it seals doesn’t mean it should be sealed. 👀

We still come across engine zincs absolutely gooped up with sealant, pipe dope, Teflon paste… you name it. The problem? Your zincs NEED proper metal-to-metal contact to do their job.

Engine zincs are sacrificial for a reason — they corrode so your expensive engine components don’t. When they’re coated in too much sealant, they can’t properly conduct or protect the system, which can lead to corrosion damage inside coolers, heat exchangers, and other components they were meant to save.

A little care during installation can save a whole lot of money later. If you’re unsure what’s “just enough” versus “way too much,” give us a call — we’d rather answer questions now than show you the repair bill later. ⚓🔧

Not every service call ends with just filters and fluids. 👀

This week, Nash was called out to a 38’ Evans in Tilghman Island, MD for routine service work on a Cummins QSC. During inspection, he uncovered an exhaust leak that led us straight to a failed turbo needing replacement.

That’s why thorough inspections matter — sometimes the biggest problems are the ones you don’t see until an experienced tech starts digging deeper.

And let’s just say… the turbo wasn’t the only thing Nash uncovered on this one. 😅

Sea trials aren’t just for the “big jobs”… they’re for every job.

You can service an oil cooler, go through an aftercooler, button everything up at the dock—and it can all look perfect.

But the dock doesn’t tell the whole story.

Once you’re under load and out on the water, that’s when it counts—
Temps stabilize (or don’t).
Pressures tell the truth.
Performance either lines up… or it doesn’t.

Even something as “routine” as an oil cooler or aftercooler service can change how a system behaves when it’s actually working.

That’s why we don’t skip sea trials. No matter how small the job.

Because “it should be good” isn’t the standard—we make sure it is.

A little extra time on the water now beats a big problem later.

Everyone’s got a “Dream Girl”… she just doesn’t always look the same 😏

Some are low maintenance.
Some just need a little attention now and then.
And then there’s this Dream Girl…
