A few posts ago, we showed you the condition of the transmission coolers on this boat and why regular maintenance matters.

Now it's time for the finished product. ✅

This 1,000-hour service is officially complete, including a new injector on the port CAT C9, cooler service, inspections, and all the maintenance needed to keep this vessel running reliably for many more hours on the water.

The best maintenance jobs aren't always the flashy ones. They're the jobs that address the issues you can see—and the ones you can't. Catching problems early, replacing worn components before they fail, and making sure everything is operating exactly as it should.

👀 Out of sight, out of mind... until it isn't.

This transmission cooler from a CAT C9 came in desperately needing attention. Just take a look at the amount of debris buildup that had accumulated over countless hours on the water.

Marine growth, shell fragments, weeds, and other debris don't take much time to start restricting water flow. As the cooler becomes clogged, its ability to remove heat from the transmission decreases, forcing components to operate at higher temperatures than intended.

The scary part? Most owners never know there's a problem until alarms start sounding, temperatures begin climbing, or expensive transmission repairs become necessary.

This is exactly why routine cooler inspections and cleanings are so important. What looks like a little debris on the outside can have a major impact on performance and reliability.

🚨 Your gauges are talking to you. Listen to them.

This generator came in with a blown coolant hose after the customer noticed the temperature climbing and smoke coming from the engine compartment.

The problem? After seeing the warning signs, the generator was started two more times.

We understand the temptation. Maybe it'll cool down. Maybe it'll make it back to the dock. Maybe it's "just a sensor." But every second an engine runs without proper cooling is another second of potential damage. What might have been a simple hose replacement can quickly turn into warped components, damaged seals, or even a complete engine overhaul.

Think of it this way: if your boat is telling you "I'm overheating," the correct response is to shut it down and investigate—not give it another chance to prove the point.

In this case, a failed coolant hose was the culprit, but the real lesson is bigger than the repair itself:

⚓ High temperature? Shut it down.
⚓ Smoke where there shouldn't be smoke? Shut it down.
⚓ Unsure what's wrong? Call someone before turning the key again.

💧 The leak that won't fix itself.

This generator came in with a seawater pump leak, and while it may seem minor at first glance, saltwater has a way of turning small problems into expensive ones.

A leaking seawater pump doesn't just leave a puddle in the bilge. It can lead to reduced cooling performance, corrosion of nearby components, damaged bearings, and eventually a complete pump failure. And when the pump quits, the generator isn't far behind.

The tough part? These leaks often start small enough that they're easy to ignore. A few drops here, a little salt buildup there. Then one day the generator starts running hot, or worse, shuts down when you need it most.

At Shore Power Solutions, we're big believers in fixing problems when they're still inconveniences—not after they've become emergencies.

When a customer says, "It was running fine last trip..." this is usually what we're talking about.

🦠 Fuel algae (technically microbial growth) doesn't care that you have a full tank or a new engine. It thrives where fuel and water meet, creating a black, slimy mess that clogs your Racor filter and starves your engine of fuel.

This Racor didn't fail—it did its job. It caught the contamination before it made its way farther into the fuel system. The downside? When it's packed with growth like this, you're one rough day on the water away from an engine that won't stay running.

The fix isn't just swapping the filter and hoping for the best. It means finding the source of the contamination, treating the fuel if appropriate, and in many cases cleaning the tank to prevent the problem from coming right back.

⚓ Preventive maintenance is always cheaper than being stranded. Regular filter inspections and fuel system service can save you from a tow bill—and a ruined day on the water.

This aftercooler was screaming for attention… and unfortunately, it had been ignored for far too long. 👀

Aftercoolers aren’t one of those “out of sight, out of mind” components. They play a huge role in engine performance, efficiency, and longevity — and when service intervals get skipped, the buildup, corrosion, and internal damage can get ugly fast.

What starts as “it’s still running fine” can quickly turn into:
⚠️ Reduced performance
⚠️ Higher engine temps
⚠️ Corrosion damage
⚠️ Costly repairs
⚠️ In worst cases, catastrophic engine failure

Not every service call can be handled at the dock. Sometimes the job calls for going all in. ⚙️

Briar and Ritchie have been hard at work tackling a full 6 year / 1000 hour service on this CAT C18 — and this one came into the shop in a BIG way. Engine and transmission were completely removed from the vessel so every component could be properly inspected and serviced the right way.

The transmission has been sent out for complete disassembly and inspection, while the team works through the rest of the service process here in-house. No shortcuts, no guessing — just thorough work designed to keep this boat reliable when it matters most.

Big jobs like this are a reminder that preventative maintenance isn’t just about checking boxes. It’s about protecting your investment, catching problems before they become failures, and keeping you on the water instead of tied to the dock.

Remember that 37’ Evans in Tilghman Island we told you about earlier this week? The one that came in for routine service and turned into a turbo replacement after Nash found an exhaust leak? Well… he wasn’t done yet. 👀

While going through the engine further, Nash found the aftercooler was seriously lacking in the service department — and unfortunately, it had reached the point where replacement was the best option.

It’s a good reminder that skipping or delaying critical maintenance items can turn a manageable service into a much bigger repair bill down the road. Aftercoolers play a huge role in engine performance and longevity, and when they’re neglected, the engine usually lets you know eventually.
