"The Scam That Almost Fooled Even Me"

I've been in this business long enough to know the plays.

But one time, the Lowball Legion almost got ME.

Not as a customer. As a competitor.

There was a company operating in our region. Nice website. Great Google rating. Competitive prices.

I started seeing them at jobs. Customers mentioned them. My phone rang less in certain areas.

I did some digging.

The reviews were fabricated. The license number on their website was real...but it belonged to a different company in a different state. The "before and after" photos on their site were stolen from a legitimate mover in Ohio.

They were ghosts.

They existed just long enough to collect deposits, execute a few visible jobs to build fake credibility, and then...

When the complaints started piling up...

They'd dissolve and reappear under a new name.

By the time customers caught on, the money was gone and the furniture was damaged and the company was "under new management" with a fresh logo.

This is not rare.

This is a playbook.

Know the signs:

No physical address you can verify
Reviews that all sound the same, posted in clusters
Prices that seem impossibly low
No clear cancellation policy
Pressure to pay a deposit immediately

I want to talk about the people.

Because the truck is just a truck.

The people are everything.

Building a moving crew is one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Not finding warm bodies — that's easy.

Post a job listing, fill the spots.

No.

Finding people who get it.

Who understand that this isn't just physical labor.

That when they walk into someone's home, they're representing a promise I made to that customer.

That their attitude...their care, their professionalism, their presence...is the product.

I've built and rebuilt crews over twenty years.

I've had guys who were incredible at the physical part but couldn't talk to a customer without making them uncomfortable.

I've had guys who were warm and friendly and charming who couldn't load a truck to save their lives.

What I look for now?

Coachable. Careful. Consistent.

Someone who asks questions instead of assuming.

Someone who takes a little more time to wrap something right instead of rushing.

Someone who, when the customer thanks them at the end of the day, looks them in the eye and means it when they say "you're welcome."

Those people?

They're rare.

When I find them, I hold on.

Because the Kingdom is only as strong as the crew that runs it.

"The YouTube Channel Nobody Expected"

My competitors thought I was crazy.

"You're going to teach people how to compete with you?"

That's what they said when I started the YouTube channel.

Here's what they didn't understand:

Knowledge isn't the secret sauce.

Character is the secret sauce.

I can teach someone everything I know about the moving business — pricing, operations, marketing, hiring — and they still have to show up and DO it.

Most won't.

And the ones who do? Good. The industry needs more good movers.

I'm not threatened by that.

I started the channel because I got tired of seeing people — smart, hardworking people — fail in this industry because they had no one to learn from.

The moving business has no MBA program. No mentorship pipeline. No industry association handing out playbooks.

You sink or swim on your own.

I swam. Barely, sometimes.

And I thought: what if I threw someone else a rope?

So I did.

The channel grew. Became top-rated. Started reaching people in states I'd never been to, countries I'd barely heard of.

All from a guy in Lansing, Michigan, talking about moving trucks.

Turns out the world needs more people willing to share what they know.

The Kingdom is bigger than Michigan.

But the moves we care about most?

Still right here at home.

"The Move of a Lifetime"

Halfway through our story.

And I want to tell you about the biggest kind of move.

Not biggest in size...though executive homes in Michigan can run large.

Biggest in what it means.

When someone calls us about an exclusive home, the kind where the furniture alone is worth more than most people's mortgages, something shifts.

Not in the quality of our work. That doesn't change.

But in the weight of the responsibility.

These customers aren't worried about whether we'll show up.

They're worried about whether we'll understand.

The difference between a $300 coffee table and a $3,000 coffee table is not visible to the naked eye.

But it is visible to us.

Because we ask.

We ask what's valuable. What's irreplaceable. What has a story.

Then we treat ALL of it like it has a story.

Because honestly?

To someone, it does.

The $50 bookshelf from a college apartment might matter more to the person moving than the $5,000 sectional.

We don't rank. We don't judge. We don't assume.

We carry it all with the same care.

That's what makes the big moves work.

And the small ones.

And every one in between.

"What We Don't Do"

You've heard a lot about what we DO.

Let me tell you about what we DON'T do.

Because sometimes that's more important.

We don't give you a quote over the phone without understanding your move. Every job is different. Square footage doesn't tell the whole story. We want to know about the piano, the gun safe, the antique armoire that's been in the family for three generations.

We don't pad the clock. Some movers work at half-speed when they're charging by the hour. You ever notice a crew that suddenly slows down around the two-hour mark? That's not fatigue. That's business strategy. We don't do that.

We don't disappear after move day. If something isn't right, something got scratched, something didn't get placed correctly, something needs a follow-up, we pick up the phone. We respond to messages. We don't vanish.

We don't send rookies to complicated jobs without supervision. I learned this lesson in a very expensive way. (See Chapter 4.) Newer crew members are trained. Supervised. Developed. We don't just hand someone a hand truck and wish them luck.

We don't take every job. I know that sounds backwards. But if I don't think we're the right fit for a job...wrong size, wrong scope, wrong timeline...I'll tell you. And I'll try to point you somewhere good. Because a bad move hurts everyone.

What we DON'T do defines us just as much as what we do.

That's the Kingdom's way.

Over twenty years, I developed what I call the Foreman's Code.

It's not written down anywhere official.

It's just… the way we do things.

Here it is:

Never make a customer feel stupid for asking a question. Moving is confusing. Pricing is confusing. Logistics are confusing. If someone asks me something I've answered a thousand times, I answer it like it's the first time. Because for them, it is.

Never surprise someone on move day. Every surprise on move day is a trust breaker. Hidden fees. Extra time. Additional charges. If something's going to change, it gets communicated before the truck pulls up.

Never leave without making sure they're okay. Not just "did the stuff arrive." Are they okay. Moving is emotional. We finish the job and check in like a human being, not a transaction.

Never send someone I wouldn't trust with my own stuff. Every person on a Mister Big Stuff crew has been vetted, trained, and held to the same standard. No warm bodies. No "he'll figure it out."

Never forget that this is someone's life we're carrying.

That last one.

That's the one I come back to every time.

It's someone's life.

We carry it with care.

Every. Single. Time.

"The Customer Who Almost Didn't Call Us"

She almost didn't call.

She'd been burned before.

Not by us...she'd never heard of us. But by a mover who showed up late, rushed through her stuff, chipped her dining table, and handed her a number to call that went straight to voicemail.

She swore she'd never hire a moving company again.

She'd get her cousins. Her brother-in-law. Her neighbor with a pickup truck.

You know how that story usually goes.

But then a friend told her about us.

"Just call them," the friend said. "They're different."

She didn't believe it. But she called.

I answered.

Not a bot. Not a call center in another state. Me.

I listened to what she needed. I asked about her stuff. I gave her a real number, not a "starting at" number. I told her what to expect on move day down to how early we'd arrive and how long it would take.

She booked us.

Move day came.

We showed up. On time. In uniform. Ready.

When we were done, she looked around at her new place everything where she wanted it, nothing broken, no drama and she said:

"Okay. You really are different."

We didn't do anything extraordinary.

We just did exactly what we said we would.

That's the whole secret.

"The Apartment That Fought Back"

Nobody tells you about stairs.

Before you're in the moving business, stairs are just… stairs.

You walk up them. You walk down them. They're fine.

Then you become a mover.

And you realize stairs are the final boss of every apartment building ever constructed.

We had a job once — a third-floor walkup. No elevator. Narrow staircase with a turn in the middle so tight you'd think the architect designed it specifically to ruin moving day.

We had a sectional sofa.

A big one.

The kind that seems, at first glance, like it should NOT fit anywhere a human being could reasonably live.

My crew stood at the bottom of those stairs like soldiers staring at a hill they had to take.

We measured. We mapped it. We argued (respectfully) about the angles.

And then…

We did it.

Forty-five minutes. One section at a time. Careful, deliberate, controlled.

When that last piece cleared the doorframe and landed exactly where the customer wanted it, there was a moment of silence.

Then my guy looked at me and said:

"The stairs fought. We won."

That's the job.

The stairs always fight.

We always win.

"The Kingdom Has Laws"

Every kingdom has laws.

The Kingdom of Big Stuff has three.

Law #1: Show up when you say you'll show up.

This sounds obvious. It is not obvious in the moving industry.

We have a clock. We use it. If we say 8am, the truck is pulling up at 8am. Not 8:45. Not "sometime in the morning." 8am.

Your time is not our time to waste.

Law #2: Treat everything like it's yours.

The moment something goes on our truck, it's under our care.

We don't rush around corners. We don't stack heavy things on fragile things. We don't play "let's figure it out when we get there."
We figure it out before it goes on the truck.

Law #3: Never leave someone worse off than we found them.
Some days things go sideways.

A piece doesn't fit. The elevator is broken. The weather turns.

When that happens, we don't disappear. We don't point fingers. We don't send you to voicemail.

We solve it.

Because that's what the Kingdom does.

These laws aren't on a poster in our break room.

They're in how we train. How we hire. How we operate every single day.

Three laws. Non-negotiable.
