Recognizing the People Who Keep Us Moving: A Conversation with Jim Pirnie About Driver Pay Increases and the Future of Grand Island Express

At Grand Island Express, success has always started with the people behind the wheel. After navigating several of the toughest years the trucking industry has seen, the company is proud to announce a pay increase for drivers and owner operators, effective with paychecks issued October 2.
We sat down with Jim Pirnie, President and Owner of Grand Island Express, to talk about the decision, the improving freight market, and why he believes this is the right time to invest in the people who have helped carry the company through challenging times.
________________________________________
Q: Jim, you've got some good news to share. Tell us about the pay increase.
Jim Pirnie: We do, and I'm really happy to be sharing it. Effective with our October 2 paychecks, company drivers and owner operators will receive a 5-cent-per-mile increase, and our local drivers will receive a 10% pay increase.
This announcement is really about recognizing our people. Our drivers and owner operators work incredibly hard every day, and we're excited to be able to reward that commitment.
________________________________________
Q: Why now? What made this the right time to make this investment?
Jim Pirnie: The last few years have been difficult for everyone in trucking. We've seen lower freight demand, too much capacity in the market, and a lot of uncertainty about where things were headed.
While we're not completely out of the woods yet, we're starting to see positive signs. The market is showing improvement, and we're feeling more optimistic about the future. As that confidence grows, we want our drivers to benefit from it too.
________________________________________
Q: It's been several years since the last overall pay increase. Was that a factor in the decision?
Jim Pirnie: Absolutely. It's been about four years since our last overall pay increase, and that's not something we take lightly.
During that time, we focused on keeping Grand Island Express strong and stable through one of the most challenging freight markets many of us have ever experienced. We worked hard to make decisions that would position us well for the future, and now we're at a point where we can take this step.
________________________________________
Q: Some companies might choose to wait until the market fully recovers. Why not wait longer?
Jim Pirnie: Honestly, because our drivers have earned it.
Through all the ups and downs, they never stopped showing up. They continued taking care of our customers, operating safely, and representing Grand Island Express the right way. Their professionalism and dedication didn't change when freight got tough.
We felt it was important to recognize that commitment now rather than waiting for some perfect moment. Our drivers played a huge role in helping us get through the challenges of the last few years.
________________________________________
Q: Does this mean the freight market is back to normal?
Jim Pirnie: Not completely.
We're encouraged by what we're seeing, but we're also realistic. There are still challenges ahead, and we know recovery takes time.
What this increase represents is confidence. We believe we're heading in the right direction, and we want the people who helped us get here to share in that progress.
________________________________________
Q: What's the one thing you'd like every driver and owner operator to hear from you?
Jim Pirnie: Thank you.
I know those words can sound simple, but I truly mean them.
The last few years haven't been easy. There have been challenges for everyone, and our drivers have handled them with professionalism, patience, and a commitment to doing the job right. They've continued to take care of our customers and support this company through a difficult period for the industry.
This pay increase is one way of showing our appreciation, but more importantly, I want our drivers to know that what they do matters. We recognize it, and we're grateful for it.
________________________________________
Q: When will drivers start seeing the increase?
Jim Pirnie: The new rates will be reflected on paychecks issued October 2, so drivers won't have to wait long to see the change.
________________________________________
Q: Looking ahead, what are you most excited about?
Jim Pirnie: I'm excited about the opportunities in front of us.
We've got a great team, loyal customers, and a strong foundation. As the market continues to improve, we'll keep focusing on growth, stability, and creating opportunities for our drivers and owner operators.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple: continue building a company that people are proud to be part of and one that's positioned for long-term success.
________________________________________
A Final Thank You
Jim Pirnie: "To every driver and owner operator at Grand Island Express, thank you. Your hard work, dedication, and commitment have helped carry this company through some very challenging years. We're grateful for everything you do, and we're excited about the future we'll continue to build together." 🚛

Grand Island Express Invests in Drivers with Company-Wide Pay Increase
A Conversation with Deen Albert, Director of Operations

Grand Island Express recently announced a significant company-wide wage increase for drivers, reinforcing its commitment to attracting and retaining the industry's best professionals. Effective with the October 2 payroll, the increase includes higher mileage rates for over-the-road drivers, pay increases for hourly drivers, and additional incentives for certain regional and East Coast operations.

To learn more about the decision and what it means for drivers, we sat down with Deen Albert, Director of Operations at Grand Island Express.

Q&A with Deen Albert
Q: Deen, Grand Island Express recently announced a company-wide wage increase. What prompted this decision?

Albert: Our drivers are the backbone of everything we do. Every load delivered, every customer served, and every mile driven happens because of the dedication and professionalism of our driving team. We constantly evaluate the market and the opportunities available to our drivers, and we've seen positive momentum in the industry this year.

At the same time, we understand the realities of life on the road. OTR driving isn't easy. It requires sacrifice, commitment, and a tremendous amount of responsibility. As the market continues to improve, we felt it was important that our drivers directly benefit from that success.

Q: What exactly does the pay increase include?

Albert: We're implementing improvements across several driver groups.

All Over-the-Road (OTR) drivers, including Owner Operators, will receive a 5-cent-per-mile increase.

For our hourly drivers, we're providing a 10% wage increase.

Additionally, drivers who domicile out of our Joliet, IL yard running regional or East Coast routes will receive an additional 3 cents per mile on top of the 5-cent increase. That means eligible drivers can see a total increase of 8 cents per mile.

Many of these regional and East Coast opportunities also include mileage guarantees, which can provide even more consistency and earning potential.

Q: Why was it important to include multiple driver groups in this increase?

Albert: Every operation within our company contributes to our success. Whether a driver is running long-haul freight, regional routes, or operating in an hourly position, each role brings value to our customers and our organization.

We wanted this announcement to reflect that commitment. This isn't just about one group of drivers. It's about recognizing the contributions of the entire driving team and ensuring we're offering compensation that remains competitive across the board.

Q: The announcement mentioned that it has been some time since the company made an across-the-board increase. Why now?

Albert: We believe in making decisions that are sustainable and meaningful. We wanted to ensure that when we made an adjustment, it would be impactful.

The freight market has shown encouraging signs this year, and we felt this was the right opportunity to invest directly in our people. We want our drivers to know that when the company succeeds, we want them to share in that success.

Q: How does this wage increase fit into Grand Island Express's broader commitment to drivers?

Albert: We've always worked hard to provide what we believe are some of the best driving jobs in the industry. Competitive pay is a major part of that, but it's not the only part.

We focus on building a culture where drivers are respected, supported, and recognized for the work they do every day. Compensation matters, and that's why this increase is important, but it's ultimately about showing appreciation and respect for the people who keep our business moving.

Q: What opportunities are available for drivers interested in the Chicago-based regional and East Coast runs?

Albert: Those opportunities continue to be a strong option for drivers looking for additional earning potential. In addition to the extra 3 cents per mile, many of those runs include mileage guarantees.

Drivers who are interested should reach out and let us know. We're always happy to discuss available opportunities and help drivers find the route structure that best fits their goals.

Q: What message would you like drivers to take away from this announcement?

Albert: First and foremost, thank you.

Our drivers work incredibly hard every day, and we don't take that for granted. This increase is a reflection of our appreciation for their efforts and our confidence in the future of the business.

I'd also encourage our team members to help spread the word. Grand Island Express is a great place to build a career, and we're proud of what we've created together. We also offer generous referral bonuses, so if you know quality drivers looking for a better opportunity, we'd love to talk with them.

Looking Ahead

The new wage increases will take effect with the October 2 payroll and represent one of Grand Island Express's most significant investments in drivers in recent years. From higher mileage rates for OTR drivers and Owner Operators to meaningful increases for hourly employees, the message is clear: Grand Island Express is committed to recognizing and rewarding the professionals who keep the company moving forward.

As Deen Albert puts it, "When our drivers succeed, Grand Island Express succeeds. This increase is about investing in the people who make everything we do possible."
