What happened to Glen Arbor?!
While my next book sits in the company of my publisher, I am currently knee-deep in writing the next one. This novel continues the adventures of my protagonists you’ll soon meet, taking them to the rustic beauty of Glen Arbor, a quaint lakeside village in the northwest corner of Lower Michigan. A little town that apparently is no longer the best kept secret of vacationers looking for food, art and a short walk to the sands of Lake Michigan. I have always loved Glen Arbor … not too big, not too busy, and not overflowing with vacationers looking for Murdick’s fudge and mini-golf.
“Let’s have lunch in Glen Arbor,” I suggested to my husband after we finished our round of golf in Manistee. So, off we went, with me all excited to reconnect with this special little town. But wait … what happened to Glen Arbor?!
The quaint little village I remember has bloomed (I was going to say, exploded, but that’s sounds too negative) into an official tourist town, complete with wine tasting, high-end apparel boutiques selling high-end outdoor brands, several restaurants and art galleries, and an entertainment venue featuring food, adult beverages, live music, and a miniature golf course so cool that it made me want to fetch my putter from the car.
Before I freak you out into thinking Glen Arbor has sold out, let me assure you that it’s still a beautiful little town. It’s just getting a little bigger and that’s okay. Tourism is important for Michigan, and if families have a new reason for packing up the kids and dog into the Subaru, that’s a good thing. Fortunately, there’s still no Starbucks or Chick-fil-A anywhere in the vicinity. And yes, you can still buy a souvenir rubber tomahawk at The Totem store. Some things never change.
