Celebrating 75 Years of Southern Railway E-8 No. 6900!

Built by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in 1951, Southern Railway E-8 No. 6900 is marking its 75th anniversary this year. Originally delivered as No. 2923, it was one of seven E-8 locomotives purchased by the Southern Railway for passenger service, producing 2,250 horsepower and working alongside earlier E6 and E7 units.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the locomotive was regularly serviced in Spencer and Atlanta. In 1957, it underwent a major rebuild in Spencer, receiving dynamic brakes, roof-mounted air tanks, and increased water capacity for its steam generator.

Originally painted in Southern’s green and aluminum scheme, the engine was repainted black in the early 1960s. In 1972 it was renumbered 6900 and repainted green again for service on the famous Southern Crescent. It continued hauling the Crescent until 1979, when passenger service transferred to Amtrak.

In January 1980, No. 6900 was donated to the North Carolina Transportation Museum and is currently on display in the Back Shop.
