Happy Mothers Day AND National Train Day!

National Train Day is always celebrated on May 10th, as it is the yearly anniversary of the driving of the golden spike that marked the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. It so happens that the day for honoring all the Moms out there falls on the same day!

Why not honor our country's railroading heritage and give Mom a great treat at the same time! Our Spring Splendor Train is departing Rockaway Beach at 11 AM and 2 PM for a scenic trip along the coastal forests and estuaries of the Nehalem Bay. The trip includes a 45 minute layover in the little town of Wheeler where you can walk into antique shops, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the magnificent views of the mountains!

Tickets available at https://oregoncoastscenic.org/train-rides/spring-splendor-excursion/

Trains have been operating between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach since Wednesday and will continue to do so through Sunday. After this weekend, there are only three more days (Wednesday-Friday April 15-17) to ride the Spring Break edition of our Coastal Excursion Train out of Garibaldi. Starting on Saturday the 18th, we will be transitioning to running our Spring Splendor Trains that depart only out of Rockaway Beach bound for Wheeler!

Each one of these trains takes you on a beautiful journey along the scenic Oregon Coast 🌊. The Coastal Excursion Train along the scenic Tillamook Bay and its coastal estuaries. Departing from both Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, this train ride will take you on a 30-minute trip each direction to and from the opposite location from where you depart, with variable layover times πŸ•’ from 30 minutes to half a day if you want to enjoy a lunch, shopping, or time at the beach! The Spring Splendor trip is a 45-minute trip each direction trip to and from Wheeler traveling along the shores of the Pacific Ocean before turning into the coastal forests 🌲 as the route travels along the breathtaking Nehalem Bay and its estuaries. This trip also includes a 45 minute layover to explore the town of Wheeler, making for a 2 hour and 15 minute total round trip.

Both excursions include onboard narrative 🎀, providing passengers with an immersive step back in time, all while traveling at a leisurely pace to your destination. Motive power (steam or diesel) varies by time, and you can use the calendar feature to check which type of locomotive is scheduled to pull a given train!

While yesterday’s post about our fabled Budd Rail Diesel Cars powering the train garnered lots of laughs and a concerning number of surprised staff members 😳, rest assured that trains at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad will continue to be pulled by locomotives for the foreseeable future. And this weekend, steam power is in the forecast as our 100 year old McCloud River Railroad #25 roars to life to pull our Easter Eggstravaganza Trains! πŸš‚πŸ’πŸ°πŸ₯š

This special event is a one hour round trip departing out of Garibaldi, featuring all the customary scenic views of Tillamook Bay and coastal estuaries along the route. 🌊🌲 What makes the ride special is that it features Easter Bunny 🐰 hopping from car to car to visit with each and every family aboard the train! Each child will also receive a giant egg packed with goodies πŸ₯šπŸ¬ like toys and candy! We have seating options in both indoor and outdoor cars, but note that with good weather in the forecast, outdoor seating is sure to sell out! 🌀

🎟 Tickets are going fast so get yours now at https://oregoncoastscenic.org/train-rides/easter-train/

❗️As a reminder, this weekends trains are only departing out of Garibaldi and do not have a layover in Rockaway Beach. Regular operations between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach will pick up again next week, operating Wednesday-Sunday for the first two full weeks of April to line up with both Spring Break periods in Washington. During our last bout of Spring Break running (nine days straight in total), Oregon Coastal Excursion train operations saw record ridership, with a 40% increase in ridership over last year’s passenger numbers πŸ˜ƒβ€ΌοΈ (which were the previous record). We greatly appreciate all the people who came out to ride last week! Your support keeps the wheels turning here at OCSR and helps support the many businesses in the communities we operate in and around!

🚨 Breaking News πŸ“£

Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad announces that all future diesel train excursions will be powered by our self propelled Budd Rail Diesel Cars #553 and #552. Diesel locomotives 274 (F7) and 101 (GP9) to be taken out of service indefinitely.

This decision was not made lightly. Due to the rising cost of diesel fuel β›½πŸ“ˆ that doesn't seem to be going away any time soon, OCSR has decided that is is far more economical to run the RDCs on excursions already scheduled for diesel power. The RDCs can carry people within their car bodies and they have smaller engines that take less fuel to run. Compared to the large V-16 engines that propel our regular diesel power, we estimate 50% cost savings on fuel by running the RDCs.πŸ’°

Due to the fact that our pre-sales for coming excursions already exceed capacity of both RDCs, and because we have many guests that like to ride in open air cars with all the good weather, 🌀 we have elected to pull the full train set behind one of the RDCs to meet the demand with seating capacity. While it is not recommended to pull a bunch of passenger cars around with an RDC, we reckon that it will be only "mildly frowned upon" due to the light grades and low speeds on the Coastal section of our railroad. We have it on good authority from multiple people on the Train Orders forum that this idea will work! πŸ‘πŸ‘

While neither RDC is currently operable as a self propelled unit, our shop crew has been taken off all other projects, effective immediately, to focus all attention and budget on getting the RDCs in service. They are working vigorously around the clock to get the job done in a week from today. πŸ˜“πŸ›

274 and 101 will sit for the forseeable future while diesel prices remain high. Should this trend continue, we will be considering all options for the future of these units including using them as an artificial reef, an idea previously considered for the RDCs when they would misbehave. 🐟 🌊

We hope you will join us for an exhilarating ride aboard a highly under-powered train and happy April Fools!

A successful opening weekend is behind us and we are looking forward to the next adventure this weekend...Steam returns to the Tillamook Coast πŸš‚β˜οΈ, along with our first 21+ train of the seasonπŸ»πŸ€!

Here's the scoop on what's in store for the weekend:

McCloud River Railroad #25, our 100 year old steam locomotive is scheduled to hit the rails and pull our popular Coastal Excursion Trains on March 14-15, departing from both Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach! The rest of March is scheduled to be diesel powered, so this appearance of the 25 is a special treat for those visiting the coast this weekend. Indoor and outdoor seating options are available, and the show that the steam engine puts on in cooler weather is not something you'll want to miss!

🎟️ Tickets for the Coastal Excursion are here: https://oregoncoastscenic.org/train-rides/oregon-coast-excursion/

If you're looking for a night out, put on something green πŸ€ as the St. Patrick's Pub Train departs Rockaway Beach this Saturday! This is one of our most popular drinks train events of the year for a variety of reasons. It will be the first train of the year that travels the picturesque line between Rockaway Beach and Wheeler. We have live music on board courtesy of Biddy on the Bench (see the video below to see part of their awesome performance from last year)! Great drinks are available from Pelican Brewing Company, Freight Beer, Square Mile Cider Co. and Nehalem Bay Winery. And of course, the excursion is scheduled to be pulled by McCloud #25! What's not to love about drinks, Irish Jigs and Steam Trains!

🎟️ Tickets for the St. Patricks Pub Train are limited as this is a one time per year event. As well, presales for food close on Thursday at noon, though we will have food for sale on the train.

The first trains of the season were greeted with a nominal amount of blue skies β›… and a good deal of guests! Opening day is always an exciting time for the OCSR staff and volunteers. During the winter, we use the two months of down-time to do maintenance on the equipment and the track πŸ› . The fruits of that labor become apparent when the first passengers of the season ride our rails! Thanks to all that joined us today!

You still have an opportunity to ride tomorrow, and over many more days this spring. Book your adventure here:

Trains start running this weekend on the Tillamook Coast! And in typical Oregon Coast fashion, it is going to be raining... Not to worry though, as we have plenty of comfortable indoor seating!

Our "Coach Car" has comfortable cushioned seats that are original to the car (albeit reupholstered). The seats are of a "walkover design" so that they can be either configured in a booth arrangement to accommodate a whole family or commuter style to enjoy a solitary seat or a spot for a couple. Our Coach was built in 1924 for the Southern Pacific Railroad, which is one of the predecessor lines that operated the Tillamook Branch.

The "Table Car" features two top and four top tables throughout. What's great about this arrangement is that if you find a bite to eat at Garibaldi or Rockaway Beach, you can bring it back on board the train and enjoy it during your return trip at a table if you're seated in this car. The table car also houses our onboard gift shop that has lots of cool merch to remember your experience by! Our Table Car was built in 1911 for the Oregon Short Line Railroad, which was a subsidiary of Union Pacific that ran out of the eastern part of the state and toward the western edge of the rocky mountains.

Find out the history of these cars and more by taking a ride with us along the scenic Tillamook Coast! This opening weekend will be diesel powered, and next weekend will be steam powered!
