Great event today at Pier 21 welcoming Margaritaville at Sea to Galveston! 🌴🚢

It was great seeing the Port of Galveston and Margaritaville at Sea come together right here on our waterfront to announce that the new Margaritaville at Sea Beachcomber will begin sailing from Galveston in October 2027.

Another major addition to our growing cruise industry and another great reason to be excited about what’s happening along the Galveston waterfront.

Welcome to Galveston, Margaritaville at Sea! We’re glad to have you here and look forward to seeing the Beachcomber in our harbor.

⚓ 126 Years of Rebuilding — The Great Storm of 1900
On September 8, 1900, Galveston was struck by the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history — a Category 4 hurricane and 15-foot storm surge that reshaped the island forever. In the years that followed, Galveston raised its own streets by up to 17 feet and built the seawall that still protects it today — one of the greatest engineering feats in American history.
That same resilience is part of what makes our harbor what it is now — home to historic vessels like the Battleship USS Texas, the USS Stewart, and the Cavalla submarine, all sitting in the waters our city fought to reclaim.

Galveston’s St. Mary’s Orphan Asylum...
On September 7, 1900 a hurricane quietly entered the Gulf of Mexico. By the next day this storm brought in winds of 150 mph, which hit the Galveston barrier island destroying the town of the same name. This hurricane known as The Great Storm is the deadliest natural disaster to hit American soil. 3,600 homes were destroyed and estimated more than 10,000 men, women and children lost their lives.

USS Texas Flooded Herself on Purpose to Save the Mission, USS Texas (BB-35) once let seawater into her own hull on purpose, and it may have saved a fire mission.

Nine days after the Normandy landings, on June 15, 1944, Texas received orders to destroy two German fortified positions that had fallen behind the advancing American lines. The targets sat just under twelve miles out, right at the edge of what her fourteen-inch guns could reach that day.

A 1911 international treaty capped how far naval guns could be elevated, and Texas had already hit that limit. Her crew found a workaround. If the barrels could not tilt any higher, the whole ship could.

They flooded the starboard torpedo blister, one of the armored sponsons built into her hull for underwater protection. Seawater poured in, and Texas listed two degrees to starboard. That tilt lifted her port-side guns the extra two degrees they needed. Both targets went down.

Sailors later called it the "Texas Lean." It has become one of the most retold stories from the ship's Normandy service, though it is usually misplaced on D-Day itself rather than more than a week later, once the fighting had already moved inland.
