Another piece of history saved.

Over the last few days, our crew at Smith House Movers has been carefully preparing this beautiful old home for relocation. This house has been sitting on original rock piers for many, many years, and although we are not exactly sure of the age, you can definitely feel the history when you crawl underneath it.

One of the coolest parts of this project is that the home was built out of rough-cut lumber that was originally cut right off the property it sits on. You just do not see craftsmanship and materials like that anymore.

To get the structure ready for the move, we had to remove an extremely heavy masonry chimney and carefully stabilize the house for transport. Soon, this old home will be relocated across the street where the new homeowners plan to restore, preserve, and give it a second life instead of seeing it torn down.

Projects like this are the reason we love what we do. Anybody can demolish an old structure, but saving a historic home and giving it another chance is something special.

Proud to be part of preserving a little piece of Georgia history.

Another successful move in the books for Smith House Movers. This home in Canton, Georgia was moved approximately 4–5 miles to its new location. We removed the sunroom for transport, safely relocated the main house, then set the sunroom back in place and reassembled everything on site.

The house is now spotted in its new location and ready for the new foundation crew. Jobs like this take a lot of planning, patience, and teamwork, especially working through tight roads, utilities, and nighttime transport. Proud of the crew for another smooth move.

The Historic McRae House Has Been Relocated

Today our crew had the honor of relocating the McRae (McCray) House in Acworth, Georgia — a farmhouse believed to date back to the late 1800s.

For more than a century this home stood on its original brick foundation. Instead of being lost to demolition, it was carefully lifted, transported through town, and placed on a new foundation so it can continue standing for generations to come.

Weeks of planning, structural preparation, route coordination, and precision lifting all came together for one incredible move day.

From the first lift…
to the slow roll through downtown…
to the final placement on its new home…

This was more than a move — this was preservation in motion.

Our family has been moving and lifting structures across Georgia since 1956, and being trusted with projects like this is something we never take lightly.

🏛️ Preserving a Piece of Acworth’s History

Smith House Movers is honored to be relocating the historic McRae (McCray) House in Acworth, Georgia.

Believed to date back to the late 1800s, this farmhouse has stood for well over a century. Built with old-growth lumber and resting on its original brick pier foundation, the home reflects the craftsmanship and character of early North Georgia construction.

Structures like this were built by hand — with materials and techniques that are rarely seen today. Rather than see it lost to demolition, efforts are being made to carefully preserve and relocate it for future generations.

Our crew has completed the structural lift and stabilization, carefully installing steel beams and preparing the home for transport with the same level of precision and respect that a 100+ year-old structure deserves.

Projects like this are more than moving buildings — they are about protecting history.
