As we get into the hotter summer weather over the next few weeks. Please keep in mind our contracted collectors who are on the roads.

You might see our contracted partners taking more breaks, starting earlier than usual, moving more slowly, and suspending collection as weather conditions change rapidly. All these factors may delay pickup; however, please continue to put your bins curbside by 6 AM.

Please continue to let them do their job and more. Like this collector in this photo captured by Greg. Doing the right thing even when no one is looking. And while this collector isn't every collector, we see them, and we ask you to see them too as summer takes hold!

Thank you, collectors and route drivers!

The Quidditch World Cup started last night in Mexico City...*Checks Notes* The World Cup of Soccer started last night in Mexico City...This means people may invite you over to watch sports, sports you know nothing about.

Don't worry, we've got your back, so you can blend in and still be sociable while segwaying any conversation into something you love...Waste diversion. Here's some championship-level conversation changers

"A RED CARD FOR THAT? C'MON." - "Yeah, that seemed like a tough call, but you know what that red card reminds me of? If people put things they shouldn't in their blue bin, they may tag it with an orange sticker. This sticker is an educational piece that punishment and encourages people to call the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling. "

"We're going into extra time, USA, USA, USA."-"You know what doesn't get extra time, collectors this time of year, it gets hot real quick, which is why you should have your bin to the curb at 6 AM."

"That German team is quite a force."- "Did you know the German word for Reuse is 'Wiederverwendung'?"

"Wow, what a header."- "Reminds me how we need to take on our waste choices head on and know recycling is just part of the solution.

"GOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL"- "Wow, what a score, I feel like I do when I recycle a metal can knowing it's infinitely recyclable."

And finally.
"Wow, you seem to be bringing up trash and recycling-related terms during this match. Are you feeling ok?"- "Yes, I've not just caught World Cup Fever, but a fever for proper waste diversion, and it's exciting, much like how this match is going into penalty kicks."

Good luck in your peopling and your sporting this next month. We're here for you if you need more!

Auntie Blue was a neighbor blue bin down the street who would give us all young Jets and Sharks advice on proper snap-battling and recycling. While Auntie Blue is gone now, her bits of advice remain.

One of her favorites was "If it touches cheeks, the trash it will meet."

Which is a solid rhyme to remember when you think about recycling paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, tissues, and similar products. Because yes, all those are paper products, but all those products shouldn't go into your blue bin for two big reasons:
A.) They're usually filled with yuck.
&
B.) They're known as "end-stage paper products," which means their fibers are so short they disintegrate during the recycling process.

So do us a favor, remember Auntie Blue's advice...And trash end-stage paper products.

Oh, and if you think Auntie Blue got recycled, she didn't; she met a nice trash bin and they retired to Boca. She went parasailcycling last week!

Neighbors, we were going to talk about getting your bin fixed, specifically broken wheels, by making references to the song "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit.

However, we've been told that it's better just to tell you that if you have a damaged cart, whether it's a wheel or a crack, the quicker you tell us, the quicker we can get you back to rocking out your recycling to the curb easier.

Here's how
Call us at 301-600-2960
Visit our Website and click on "Cart Requests."
Or use the "Report an Issue" function on Recycle Coach.

We look forward to putting on our helper hat, backward of course, and repairing your issue ASAP!

We spy with our little eyes sommmeeeething confusing. Today we finished up a big can of coffee and went to recycle it...However, the label said "Multi-layered canister" and that it was NOT recyclable...It looked like a can to us.

So we cut it open to see what the multi-layers were...And to our surprise, it was completely metal. So why the confusion?

1.) Labels are not as easy to change as materials. In the name of ease and not ballooning profit, many companies won't change labels even if they change materials. This means that if this brand uses 100% metal containers, it also uses Multi-layered canisters, which often have tin foil covering a paperboard or cardboard. They are going to go with the material they use more.

2.) The "How 2 Recycle" labels aren't always accurate to the locality. When an item says it's recyclable, it means there are broad programs that accept the materials it lists, but not every program. "How 2 Recycle" is currently updating their indications to include "Widely Recyclable," "Check Locally," "Store Drop-off," and "Not Recyclable," so that will be helpful!

3.) Multi-Layer Canisters can be identified by squeezing. These canisters are often cardboard, lined with tin foil or even plastic. When you squeeze them, if you can easily create breakage, then more than likely that's not metal. Pringles canisters, some nut canisters, and the premade dough in the tubes like Pillsbury crescents are the most common.

So what is the best way to clear up the confusion? When in doubt, throw it out. Yep, hard to say, but if it's giving you anxiety, just junk it.

Summer movie season is in full swing, and there are some big movies coming out. None more exciting than Predator V. Blue Bin!

Did we shoot this movie with our phone? Yes. Is the predator just a 10-year-old in an old Halloween mask and a wig made of extension cords? Maybe. Are we going to get sued? No, we think we've established enough parody that we'll be ok. Will Arnold Schwartzenager work for a home-cooked dinner and a mini-recycle blue bin? No.

And while, yes, it's highly unlikely that a predator will be lurking outside your blue bin, this summer, be extremely cautious about what predators you might be putting in. However, instead of hunting aliens for a ritual rite of passage, these predators can break machinery, cause fires and injuries, and destabilize our recycling program. So please leave out:

Plastic Bags
Wires and Cords
Batteries
Flammable Liquids
Fireworks
Chemicals

We thank you in advance, and Arnold...Call us!

Overstimulated? Consider this post a calming, centering presence in your hectic Monday. To fulfill our moral obligation to be boring once in a while, today we talk about the boring truths as to why we only have BiWeekly Recycling.

Truth one: We're not very dense. Population-wise, you know how dense we are mentally. With Frederick County being as large as it is, and while there are a few denser pockets, we service almost 90,000 addresses throughout the county, and the only way to service all of them equitably and within budget is a BiWeekly collection model.

Truth two: Biweekly recycling does not equate to more items collected. While some of us are super recyclers and make purchasing choices based around recycling, your average recycler does not. This means we would increase the cost of collection but not increase the amount collected, which could further strain stability.

Truth three: Like all our programs, curbside recycling is funded through our enterprise fund. The $88 Systems Benefit Charge mostly funds this effort. We would need to further increase said fee, which has not been done for a VERY long time. Would that fee increase be worth it?

And, while there are more reasons, those are the three truths we talk about most often. Will these truths change in the future? They may, however, to help support those super recyclers out there, remember we do have our recycle center drop-off that accepts everything we accept in your blue bin and more. You can also put overs in a bin or box clearly labeled "recycling."

A boring post but an important post! Don't forget we're always here to support you with options!

FORE!!!! To paraphrase Al Czervik...Yes, it's gonna get recycled. Even though it might look a little shimmery, it's the ink and matte they use, and it is not glitter or foil. Big shout-out to Dean, who sent us a message about this weekend!

And since we're talking about Golf, let's talk about some of the ways you can make the best waste choices on the course:

-Donate gear when you can and use reusable water bottles on the course.
-Cardboard, scorecards, empty beverage cans and bottles, and spray-on bug spray and sunscreen can be recycled curbside.
-Broken clubs can be recycled at our scrap metal dumpster.
-Towels, shoes, clothes, hats, golf club covers, and golf club bags can be recycled in our Textile Recycling bins at our recycle center drop-off.

Thank you very little! But remember, a little can go a long way.

What a week it's been!!! Thanks to Green Valley Elementary School for hosting us this week.

We spoke to 800+ students in grades K through 5, gave individual lessons to every K through 3rd grader, and invited over 250 4th and 5th-graders into the "RecycleDome," our waste-reduction game show to end the week!

Special thanks to Ms. Hanlon and their green school team, as well as all the teachers and support staff, for their hospitality. Go Giants!!!
