We had conversations this week with four Logistics Managers who were experiencing many of the same problems. One month in, six months in, and two just under a year into their programs. All four are already planning their exit.

Different companies but seeing the same pattern. Unknown names in the market, new MCs with no real track record, high commission splits used as the hook, financial pressure behind the scenes, and little to no support once freight actually starts moving.

This is becoming more common right now, but is not new by any means. A lot of programs are built to recruit, not to operate. The split gets attention, the structure gets ignored, and that doesn’t show up until something goes wrong. A freight manager doesn't typically figure out what group they've joined until they have a missed pickup, bad carrier, claim, or silence when they need help.

The agents and managers who last in this business aren’t chasing the highest split. They’re looking for stable credit, real carrier relationships, clear processes when things go sideways, and people who answer the phone 24/7.

At the end of the day, you’re not paid on percentage, you’re paid on what actually moves and what doesn’t fall apart. Most people don’t realize that until they’ve already had to learn it the hard way.

If you’re in it right now, you already know what we’re talking about.

There’s a lot of noise around the freight market right now. Everyone has an opinion, a chart, or a prediction.

Capacity is uneven. Good carriers are selective. Bad ones are loud. And the gap between the two has been getting wider.

For shippers and brokers cheap rates almost always come with trade-offs. Sometimes it’s weak vetting. Sometimes it’s poor communication. Sometimes it’s no ownership when something goes sideways. You won't see the cost until after the pickup or just before with no-call-no-shows. Missed updates. Missed appointments. Missed accountability.

Often times we see shippers choosing price before process, usually because the risk isn’t obvious upfront. In this market, ex*****on matters more than the quote. The carrier and broker’s standards, systems, and willingness to say no matter more than a few dollars on a rate.

If the freight matters, the discipline behind it matters even more.

Monday Thoughts: The trucking market isn’t confusing, People are just looking in the wrong places.

There’s a lot of talk about demand, the economy, and where freight is headed next.
Meanwhile, on the ground, it’s pretty clear what’s happening. Trucks aren’t being added. Drivers are leaving. Some capacity that used to be “available” simply isn’t showing up anymore. That’s why coverage can feel tight even when volumes aren’t booming. It’s not a paradox. It’s a supply problem.

If you’re only watching demand charts, the market looks backwards. And if you’re watching who’s actually running freight, it makes sense.

What are you paying attention to right now?

01/16/2026

For everyone who suddenly became a trucking cycle expert...

The trucking market is tightening. Not because demand is booming, but because capacity keeps leaving the market.

Fleets aren’t buying trucks. Some operators are getting pushed out as compliance enforcement ramps up. Others are still recovering from the longest freight downturn we’ve seen and don’t have the balance sheets to expand.

Demand is down roughly 7 percent year over year.
Spot rates are up about 10 percent.
That only happens when supply disappears.

Right now, the market isn’t about demand forecasts or macro headlines. It’s about how many trucks are actually left.

Curious how others are seeing this play out in their lanes.

The New Year Is Officially Underway. The first week or two of January usually comes in hot. Pent-up freight, end-of-year inventory moves, and tight coverage keep rates and volumes elevated right out of the gate. Then the market shifts.

As January moves along and into February, load volumes typically soften. Rates ease. Carrier capacity becomes more available. It’s a familiar part of the cycle, but one that still catches people off guard every year.

This window is where smart operators adjust. Shippers have room to reset lanes and clean up routing guides. Brokers and carriers can be more selective, tighten ex*****on, and prepare for the next demand swing.

Then spring hits. It looks like 2026 will be a volatile year with capacity crunches and freight volume spikes. It won’t be defined by big promises. It’ll be defined by consistency, reliability, and decisions made when the market gets uncomfortable.

Here’s to a year of doing the work the right way, even when no one’s watching.

Current Snapshot: National Re**er Rates (All-In, Including Fuel)

As of this week, the refrigerated market is showing familiar signs of the seasonal tightening.

Contract re**er rates are at a national average of $2.77 per mile, with modest upward movement compared to last month.

Spot re**er rates are at $2.61 per mile and they’ve moved faster than contracts over the past few weeks.

The spread between contract and spot is narrowing, which is typical heading into late Q4. What’s different this year is the timing. We saw this shift earlier than expected.

Tender rejections on refrigerated freight are also beginning to rise ahead of schedule. That’s being driven more by capacity and operational constraints than a sudden spike in demand.

In practical terms:
There’s no need for drastic changes, but holiday and year-end refrigerated freight will likely be more expensive to move than it was last year. We’re also starting to see early signals that routing guides could come under pressure again in 2026, particularly on inconsistent re**er lanes.

There’s still time to be intentional. Some lanes make sense to secure with contract coverage. Others may continue to perform better with spot flexibility, depending on service requirements and seasonality.

The key right now isn’t reacting, it’s paying attention and planning ahead.

Curious how others are approaching this.
Are you leaning more on contract re**er capacity right now, or staying flexible in the spot market?

How Re**er Freight Protects Pharma and Medical Supply Chains

Most people associate refrigerated trucking with food, but the stakes are even higher in the pharmaceutical world.

Temp swings don’t just create waste, they can compromise safety and shut down entire distribution lines.

What keeps these supply chains stable isn’t fancy marketing or complex software. It’s disciplined re**er operations that don’t cut corners.

Transport requirements:

• Temperatures held within tight tolerances during the entire trip
• Pre-cooled trailers and verified unit performance before loading
• Proper airflow management to prevent hot or cold pockets
• Secure loading and sealing procedures to protect product integrity
• Real-time visibility backed by people who actually pay attention

In this space, consistency isn’t optional.

A missed temp check or poor airflow decision can result in thousands of dollars in product loss and delayed patient care down the line.

Re**er freight is the backbone of many medical and pharmaceutical supply chains. When it’s handled correctly, it keeps hospitals, clinics, and distribution centers running without interruption.

Brokers and shippers, quick question for you:

When you’re booking carriers, what ends up being the top priority?
Price, reliability, or speed?

Everyone wants all three, but we all know one usually takes the lead depending on the freight, the customer, and the pressure of the lane.

We’re curious what matters most in your world and why.
Your insights help everyone understand how the market is shifting.

Drop your answer in the comments, the conversation is always better when more voices jump in.
