The Domino Effect

We had a bowl of fun participating in Broward Sheriff's Office’s Boxes of Love, which culminated yesterday in the cereal domino display at Greater Fort Lauderdale / Broward County Convention Center. The donated cereal boxes will stock local Broward County food pantries to help families in need. Thank you to our staff, customers and partners for donating hundreds of cereal boxes to the Port Everglades deputies.

Our mangrove restoration project at West Lake Park is a winner! The National Association of Counties (NACo) has recognized this forward-thinking initiative for its environmental excellence and community benefit. The project restored shoreline along the Intracoastal Waterway and is protecting it from deterioration. It is one of the largest habitat mitigation projects of its kind in the region, and a model for how ports can enhance natural resources and support economic growth. Kayakers who enjoy Broward County’s West Lake Park are also winners with even more natural habitat to explore. Kudos to our Seaport Engineering and Construction Department for a job well done.

This environmental initiative was conducted in advance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Harbor Navigation Improvement Project to deepen and widen port channels to enable the safe passage of newer, larger and more sustainable ships and to offset impacts for the completed Southport Turning Notch. The mitigation plan was then permitted through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, South Florida Water Management District and Broward County and involved extensive coordination with those agencies as well as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Inland Navigation District, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The port community’s generosity was on full display today with 30 boxes of donated supplies and more than $5,000 for Venezuelan earthquake relief collected by the Port Everglades Association. The donations, which included tents, sleeping bags and non-perishable people and pet food, were taken to the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) in Doral for transport to the disaster areas. Port staff participated in the heavy lift by helping load up the donations into trucks.

Broward County has launched relief efforts to support those impacted by the twin earthquakes in Venezuela. Starting Monday, July 6, residents and businesses are encouraged to donate essential supplies including tarps, water, flashlights, sleeping bags, batteries, trash bags, tents, work gloves, nonperishable food, solar-powered lights, personal care items, diapers, first aid kits, and more at designated drop-off locations. Only new items will be accepted. More details at Broward.org.
