While staying in Boston, we took a road trip to Newport, Rhode Island to tour The Breakers, a summer home built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II from 1893-1895. We did a self-guided walk around the house, which was set up for an upcoming concert and surprisingly accessible for wheelchairs.

After a week of sailing, we had to say goodbye to Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam! Disembarkation was easy and the Port of Boston was incredibly efficient.

Norfolk, Virginia greeted Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam with aircraft carriers and battleships! This city is home to Naval Station Norfolk, a United States Navy base, and Nauticus, a museum and discovery center that shares the history of the Navy and the USS Wisconsin (BB-64), an Iowa-class battleship built for the United States Navy in the 1940s. Battleships like the Wisconsin saved soldiers’ lives during wartime.

A lot of American and naval history can be found in Norfolk and the Chesapeake Bay!

Hadn’t planned on doing an excursion while docked in Saint John, New Brunswick but “Saint John in Focus: Bay of Fundy Coastal Photography” presented itself as an option with a $100 onboard credit. This tour took us to the Cape Spencer Lighthouse, Mispec Beach, and Fallsview Park and the Reversing Falls while teaching guests photography lessons and tips about how to capture these scenic locations. Thanks to Donna and Amber for the introduction to and transportation around a new Canadian province for us!

“From Sea to Shining Sea” carries a different meaning when you’re on Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam for . Due to rainy weather in Boston, the Boston Pops and the drone and fireworks show was delayed. Turns out, our ship’s position made it impossible to see the drone show and only barely possible to see fireworks, but we managed to find a live stream and saw the whole thing on a small phone screen.

Before it started raining, we went up to Deck 9 to sing “America the Beautiful” with other patriotic passengers. Despite all the ways in which our plans were foiled on this , this was a special shared moment.
