Not every load is worth taking.

Before accepting freight, look at:

💰 Rate — Is the pay worth the work?
🛣️ Total miles — Don’t look at loaded miles alone.
🚛 Deadhead — Empty miles cost fuel, time, and money.
⏰ Appointments — Can you realistically make them?
📍 Delivery location — Where will this load leave you?
📦 Next opportunity — What does this load set you up for?

A load can pay well and still hurt your week if it leaves you in a poor market or creates excessive empty miles.

Don’t chase every load. Chase the loads that move your business forward. 💰

What is deadhead?

Deadhead miles are the miles your truck travels without a paying load.

For example:

📍 You deliver in Dallas
📍 Your next pickup is in Houston
📍 You drive 240 miles empty to get there

Those miles still cost you fuel, time, and wear—but they’re not generating freight revenue.

That’s why good route planning matters.

A dispatcher should look beyond the current load and consider where that load leaves you and what opportunities may be available next.

Getting the truck loaded is important. Getting it positioned for the next profitable move is even better.
