The month of May is notable to the AAPI community for two critical reasons. On May 7, 1843, the very first Japanese immigrant arrived in the United States. More than 20 years later, on May 10, 1869, the first transcontinental railroad was completed, a project more than 20,000 Chinese workers participated in further unifying the United States. Railroad companies were at first reluctant to hire Chinese workers, deeming them too "weak," but the immigrants soon proved to be a vital powerhouse.
