One way I express my appreciation and reverence for our public lands is picking up trash. Thursday morning I found a weird assortment of fragments of car parts in the Ranger Creek Campground. The total volume was not that great. I got all of it in this feed sack. But it took an hour and a half to pick up all the bits. The sun was shining and I got it all cleaned up. A happy morning. I even wrote about the adventure on my Substack page.

Not every morning is bright. But every morning in the mountains is enchanting. (Especially, if you're prepared.)

Free Geology Tour of Mt Peak in Enumclaw.
October 11, 2024

To register call or text Talking Rocks Outdoor Company, 253-350-1211.

Our instructor will be Trevor Contreras of the Washington Geological Survey.

There are fascinating rocks on Mt. Peak, columns, lava, breccia, volcanic tuff, and glacial till. Some of the rocks on Mt. Peak came all the way from Canada. Some of the rocks are 20 million years old. Some of the rocks contain fossils.

Mr. Contreras will help us understand more of the story of the rocks on this little mountain in our backyard.

The event is free, but we ask that you register so we’ll know you are coming.

A poem for my hikers.

8/20/2024
Berry Creek Farm

I'm sitting in the breezeway on the east side of the barn,
listening to the clatter of rain on the tin roof.
A symphony, concerto, song.
There are crescendos and brief moments of pianissimo.
Sparrows chirp obbligatos.

I surrender to the music,
Dwell in its flow,
Revel in it,
Notice individual notes and phrases.
Then lose myself again in its sweep and movement.

Later today, I'll wish it away.
The gray and damp will weigh heavy.
I will want the customary August sun back.
I'll think about my hikers in the mountains--
The five old guys from Canada I dropped off at White River yesterday
And the couple from Portland I drove to Sunrise--
And wish for them blue sky, sun-dappled trails, and dry clothes.

But for now,
I'm enjoying the concert.

A busy day today. 8:30 pick up two hikers at White River Ranger Station and drop off at Longmire to start a four trip Then pick up at 11a at Box Canyon--two moms and two kids with soaking wet clothes and sleeping bags--and transportation to their car at Sunrise. Then pick up two people at Mowich who had to end their hike 3 days early because of a bad knee.

I spent yesterday at the Fawn Ridge Aid station supporting the White River 50 mile ultra. Great race. Great trails. This week we're back to serving hikers. Monday we're delivering a fuel canister to the White River Ranger Station for inclusion in a food cache and picking up a hiker at the White River Trailhead.

Yesterday, I drove a couple of people from the airport to Paradise with stops along the way to check out waterfalls. We had hoped to go to Sunrise, but time got away from us and we had to hurry back to the airport to catch their plane.
