Check out this informative post from ISD 728! As school wraps up and more students are enjoying the nice weather, be aware of electric bikes and scooters near roadways and parking lots.
We've been getting some questions about E-Bike and Electric Scooters, as they've popped up in our parking lots and on trails around our school property. This can be of particular concern for safety around drop-off and pick-up times.
In Wright County (Otsego schools), E-bicycles should be 750 W max, 28 mph max, and 15 yrs or older to operate. They are not considered motor vehicles, so operate with the same rules as bicycles if they fall under the E-bicycle restrictions on size, speed, etc.
Motorized foot SCOOTERS: Min age 12 (must wear a helmet under 18), max 15 mph, no passengers, no sidewalks but operates via bicycle rules otherwise (can be on streets, paths, trails, etc).
The same rules apply for Sherburne County (Elk River and Zimmerman schools) - but a lower speed limit of 20mph for the E-Bikes.
Hennepin County (our Rogers schools) also enforces the 20 mph limit for bikes and the 15 mph for scooters. Age 15 and age 12 ordinance - which is actually state statute - applies.
We strongly encourage parents to enforce these rules, particularly the age 15 or older operation ordinance enacted by the state - for the use of E-Bikes on school property and the age 12 guidance for scooters - on school property.
