This one is nasty Ya’ll. We don’t know how widespread this one is, but this bank card scam is bad enough that it needs mentioning. These scammers mimic local bank numbers and call actual bank customers and tell them that their bank card has been used out of state. The scammers correctly utilize the last 4 digits of the victim’s bank card and ask if the out of state purchases are legitimate. Once the victim denies making the purchases, the scammers say that they will cancel the card and send out a new one. They’ll even text a confirmation number to the victim’s phone. The final and worst piece of the scam is that they ask for the victim’s PIN number to confirm canceling the card. If they succeed in getting the pin number, they now have unfettered access to the victim’s bank card, and naturally they DO NOT cancel the card. They’ll probably clone the card to sell to other scammers or go on a spending spree.

I don’t care what the situation is, NEVER give out your pin number over the phone to anyone. A legitimate bank will NEVER ask for that over the phone. If you get a call like this and think it could be legitimate, hang up and call or contact your bank however you normally would. It’s too easy for scammers to mimic virtually any phone number these days! A true fraud alert from a bank will likely be transmitted as a text or email, and they won’t ask for any of your info!
