Aero Club of Southern California The Aero Club of Southern California

The Aero Club of Southern California traces its roots to the mid-1920s, when it was formed as the local chapter of the National Aeronautic Association. A few years earlier, during World War I, the new science of powered flight had captured the public's imagination when aircraft were used in wartime roles. When it was chartered in August, 1925 the Aero Club set out to "increase the public awareness

of aviation and highlight the new and expanding uses of aviation in the United States and around the world."

✈️ From the U-2 and SR-71 to some of the most groundbreaking aerospace innovations in history, the Lockheed Skunk Works has shaped the future of aviation for generations.

The Aero Club of Southern California is pleased to share a free public event hosted by the Burbank Public Library featuring author Josh Dean and former Skunk Works Director Steve Justice. Together, they will discuss Dean's new book, "The Impossible Factory: The Remarkable True Story of Kelly Johnson and the Lockheed Skunk Works: America's Innovation Machine".

Kelly Johnson, one of aviation's most influential innovators, was also ACSC's 1982 Howard Hughes Memorial Award honoree.

✈️ Introducing “Origins of ACSC” — A New Historical Series

The legacy of the Aero Club of Southern California (ACSC) dates back to the pioneering days of the early 1900s, when aircraft were highly experimental and flying was inherently dangerous.

The Aero Club of America (ACA) was founded in June 1905 to promote and regulate the advancement of aviation in the United States, both as a sport and a commercial endeavor. Before federal oversight existed, the ACA served as the nation’s governing body for aeronautics — establishing pilot regulations, certifying pilots, and issuing the first pilot licenses in the United States.

In October 1905, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) was established in Paris to standardize aviation rules and verify aeronautical records internationally. Aero clubs from eight countries adopted the FAI statutes, including France, the United States (ACA), Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland.

On May 26, 1908, the Aero Club of California (ACC) — predecessor to today’s ACSC and the second ACA chapter in the country — was organized in the library room of the Los Angeles Times. Its 22 founding members were involved in aircraft manufacturing, flying, and aviation instruction. They elected aviation enthusiast James Slough Zerbe as the organization’s first President.

In May 1909, the ACC organized Southern California’s first aeronautical exhibition at Fiesta Park in downtown Los Angeles, featuring balloon, airplane, and glider exhibits and demonstrations. Public interest in aviation accelerated rapidly, and over time the ACC evolved into the Aero Club of Southern California.

The accompanying video features James Slough Zerbe (1849–1921) and several of his experimental aircraft designs developed between 1909 and 1919, including the Sextuplane, Quintaplane, and the later “Air Sedan.” While none achieved sustained flight, they embodied the ambition, experimentation, and engineering optimism that defined the earliest era of aviation.

This post marks the beginning of our ongoing “Origins of ACSC” historical series, exploring the people, events, and innovations that helped shape both ACSC and Southern California’s aerospace legacy.

Artemis II launches April 1 at 6:24 PM, it will be the first crewed mission of NASA's Artemis program, designed to send four astronauts on an approximately 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth. Launching from Kennedy Space Center, it is the first mission to take humans to the lunar vicinity since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crewmwmbwers will splash down off the coast from San Diego. California has more people working on the Artemis program than any other state, with over 16,000 employees across more than 500 companies. Prime Contractors with SoCal Facilities include:

Aerojet Rocketdyne (L3Harris): Their Canoga Park facility is the lead for the SLS rocket engines. Engineers here were responsible for upgrading and testing the RS-25 engines powering today's launch.

Northrop Grumman: Maintains a massive presence in the South Bay, specifically in Redondo Beach, El Segundo, and Manhattan Beach. While their boosters are famously assembled in Utah, these SoCal sites contribute critical engineering and components for the Orion launch abort system.

Lockheed Martin: While the Orion capsule is largely built in Florida and Colorado, Lockheed Martin maintains teams in San Diego to coordinate recovery efforts at sea after the spacecraft splashes down off the California coast.

Boeing: Operates several major facilities in Southern California, including sites in Huntington Beach and El Segundo that support SLS and Orion engineering, though the core stage assembly primarily takes place at NASA's Michoud facility

Additionally several Regional Specialized Contractors include:

AMRO Fabricating Corp (South El Monte): A key manufacturer that provides large, complex metallic structures for both the SLS rocket and the Orion spacecraft.

Karman Space & Defense (South El Monte): Supplies key elements and parts for the Artemis mission hardware.

Applied Composites (Oceanside): Specialized composite materials.
Advanced Test Equipment Corp (Sorrento Valley): Mission-critical testing hardware.

Rayotek Scientific (Sorrento Valley): High-pressure viewing windows and specialized glass.

Plus, NASA Centers in Southern California:

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL - La Cañada Flintridge): Provides deep space communication and navigation support.

NASA Dryden Flight Research Center (Edwards Air Force Base): Utilizing aircraft like the Gulfstream III to track the Orion capsule during its high-speed reentry

Enjoy the teamwork!!
