🚨 FUN FACT SATURDAY! 🚨
Ever passed one of those steep gravel ramps on a mountain pass and wondered what actually happens if an 80,000 lb semi loses its brakes at 70 MPH? 🛑🚛
It’s not just a pile of dirt,it’s pure physics in action.
Here is what really goes down on a Runaway Truck Ramp:
📍 It acts like quicksand. The ramp isn't hard packed. It’s filled up to 3 feet deep with uncompacted, rounded pea gravel. When a heavy rig steers into it, the tires sink instantly. The gravel behaves almost like a liquid, swallowing the wheels and absorbing massive kinetic energy into displacing stone instead of tearing up the rig.
📍 70 to 0 without brakes. The rolling resistance of deep gravel—combined with a steep uphill grade,can bring an 80,000 lb runaway truck to a complete, safe stop in just a few hundred feet.
📍 Aircraft carrier style. On tight mountain roads where there’s no room for a long gravel bed, engineers use mechanical cable arrestor systems. The truck enters a narrow lane and hits a series of heavy-duty steel cables that catch the frame,using the exact same concept as tailhooks landing fighter jets on aircraft carriers!
