Following a thorough inspection of LaGuardia’s airfield pavement using ground-penetrating radar, areas of concern were identified and proactively repaired. Those repairs are now complete, and Runway 4/22 has been reopened. Our investigation into the cause of the sinkhole is ongoing.

While LGA remained open to flight operations during the closure of the runway, reduced capacity affected flight operations. Travelers should expect residual delays and are encouraged to check their flight status with their airline.

05/21/2026

LaGuardia’s Runway 4/22 remains closed as emergency construction and engineering crews complete necessary repairs and proactive inspections of the airfield as quickly and safely as possible. We fully expect to be able to reopen the runway before flight operations tomorrow, although pending the results of continued inspections and repairs an earlier reopening is possible.

LGA remains open to flight operations but we expect delays throughout the day, so travelers should check with their airline for flight status before arriving at the airport.

05/20/2026

At approximately 11 a.m., the Port Authority was conducting its daily morning inspection of LaGuardia’s airfield when crews identified a sinkhole near Runway 4/22. The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible.

The Port Authority is in close communication with airlines and airport partners and will continue providing updates as conditions evolve. Travelers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms expected later today, and are strongly encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status information.

Don't be a victim of fraud.

For your safety, please make sure to only use licensed and insured ground transportation options:

1. Look for official airport signage directing you to licensed taxis, shuttles, and rideshares.
2. Verify company logos and driver IDs. Avoid them if they appear unofficial.
3. When in doubt, ask airport staff. They can guide you to reputable services.
