We had a military vet come out to Highland the other day who’s had flying the MD 500 on his bucket list for years. We finally got to get him up in one and make it happen.
Between his endless Huey stories and a lifetime of aviation knowledge, sharing the cockpit with him was a blast. As soon as he grabbed the controls, you could tell the muscle memory was still right there—like he’d never left the sky.

Building speed and transitioning to forward flight. 🚁⚡️
JD walking Marcus through a proper takeoff roll—managing stick position, working through effective translational lift (ETL), and trading hover power for clean airspeed.
It’s all about smooth control inputs and letting the physics work for you as you transition off the ground. Clean ex*****on, Marcus!

There’s a lot more that goes into setting up a solid approach than what you can squeeze into a quick video—power management, airspeed control, rate of descent, and wind checks all happening at once. 🚁
Logan working through approach drills with Simon today. Pulling off a smooth approach like this with only 4 or 5 hours in the logbook is seriously impressive. Outstanding work, Logan—keep grinding!
Ready to get behind the controls and start your training? DM us or hit the website to get on the schedule.

I had a great time filming the Animas Palooza, going up in a chopper, being shown around the planes and hangars, I never knew the gas tanks are in the wings of these planes? Cool event!

No better way to celebrate the season at Animas Air Park! 🚁🎃
Dropping pumpkins out of helicopters and planes is a absolute blast, and we’ve had an incredible time tearing up the skies with everyone today.
The fun isn’t over yet—join us at 6:00 p.m. today for the annual pig roast dinner and live music. Come grab a plate, enjoy the music, and talk aviation with us!
See you on the ramp! 🍖🎶

Always good having pilots come out to see what Highland and the MD 500 are all about. 🚁⚡️
Marc came out to get a feel for the aircraft, so we put him right to work on some semi-advanced hover drills—holding a precise orbit around a spot while keeping the nose locked dead-center on the target.
Between the pedal work and collective management, it opened up a great conversation on why we rely so heavily on the 500 for high-altitude mountain training: instant response, incredible power margins, and zero delay between control input and aircraft reaction.
Ready to experience the MD 500 in the Rockies for yourself? Send us a DM or head over to our website to get on the schedule.
