Do You Know About Munger Landing

The Munger Landing, located at the bottom of the Smithville neighborhood and just south of Spirit Lake Marina, has experienced many wonderful changes in the last couple of years. The landing consists of a beautiful fishing pier, boat launch, and the only designated swimming beach on the estuary. This beach makes it ideal for launching canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards.

According to greatlakesmud.org, the landing being situated downstream from the US steel plant, caused it to be a heavily polluted area of the estuary. Contaminated by PCBs and dioxins/ furans, the cleanup was conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources using various funds from both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Using dredging to remove contaminates, and then placing a layer of sand over residual contamination, followed by a second layer of sand and biomedium, the area now provides habitat conducive to native fish and plant life.

A fun fact, provided by https://www.stlouisriver.org/news/munger-landing-project-updates is that work done over the winter, using an ice bridge, minimizes damage to wetland areas.

The Munger Landing is a very easy paddle from Spirit Lake Marina, with a beautiful birding island directly west, causing the landing to reside in one of the calmest parts of the estuary, even on the windiest of days. It is a great place to gather with friends and family for relaxing and lazy paddle afternoons, or is a beautiful starting paddle for larger adventures. Call, stop in, or visit our website to find out more about renting a canoe and kayak to get you out on this beautiful section of river.

Do You Know About Clough Island?

With a rich history, Clough is the largest island on the St. Louis Estuary, located directly in front of Spirit Lake Marina and RV, and is Wisconsin owned land. The island is part of the St. Louis River Stream Bank Protection Area. Clough was originally owned by Judge Solon S. Clough who, in 1904, sold the island to Robert Whiteside. Clough Island stayed in the Whiteside family for just under 100 years. Considered their summer retreat, they raised wheat, sheep and cows right on the island. The structures burned down in the 50’s, but foundations still remain.

For more information about the restoration of the island and the river visit https://stlouisriverestuary.org/restoration_clough.php.
For more information on the history of the island check out the book The Whiteside Island Story- Emerald Island of St. Louis Bay by Claire W. Schumacher.

Today, Clough Island is accessible by both paddle and motor boat and is teeming with various plant and animal life, and is an easy paddle that takes about 2 hours to complete. The south side of the island consists of a long sandy beach, whose width depends on the water level. Towards the west of the south side exists a picnic table, an informational sign, and a trail where building ruins from the previous owners can be seen. There is also a wonderful tree that is perfect for tying a boat off. The island is easily accessible from Spirit Lake Marina and RV and features many beautiful views and wonders to explore. With a smaller island off the West side of Clough, and a shallow channel between, there are many exciting routes surrounding the area. Our experienced staff can give you pointers on routes, and what to find on both canoe/ kayak, or a pontoon, to get the most out of this beautiful island.
