It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our friend and Chapter member Jim Rohlf. He was a regular attendee at our Saturday morning coffee, often the first to arrive. He passed away doing what he loved: flying his T-28 Trojan at the Monticello airport.

Jim had acquired several Vietnam area aircraft, including the T-28 he recently flew at Oshkosh airshows, a Skyraider, Bird dog, & Huey helicopter in addition to his American Champion Scout and Baron twin.

He farmed near Tipton and loved appearing in airshows and airport events to showcase these aircraft and hearing the stories of Veteran’s experiences in the planes he showed. He was a private, quiet, well-read man with a quick wit and enjoyed the verbal repartee at our Chapter hanger coffee. Several of us attended events at his hanger at KMXO for his Wright Brother’s award, QB meetings, and a lecture Jim hosted featuring a Raven pilot from the Vietnam area.

Jim often flew one of his warbirds to the Dubuque airport EAA Pancake breakfast, and the coffee crowd recently enjoyed the “whomp, whomp” sound of his arrival in his most recent aircraft, the Huey. The accident is under NTSB investigation. Our thoughts and prayers for his wife Karen and their children.
