TRUCK TIP | Frozen brakes…. Oh man!
It’s about that time when temperatures drop and weather turns south… and with that — the opportunity for frozen brakes.
Commercial motor vehicles using air brakes function by releasing air pressure to push brake shoes against the brake drum. When parked, air once holding the spring brakes back is released and the shoes are pressed against the drum to prevent roll away accidents. When things get wet and then cold… freezing happens.
Try these tips to break those brakes free!

Only one way to gettin’ the job done, and that’s the right way.
After hours, early mornings, whatever it takes to deliver whenever and wherever needed.

It’s that season….
If your truck is parked or stopped overnight or for multiple days, you’re more likely to develop frozen brakes. This happens when moisture get trapped between the brake shoes and the brake drum after parking brakes are applied. As temperatures drop, the moisture freezes, bonding the brakes to the drum.
Should this happen, don’t panic! It’s a tale as old as time! Instead, start your truck and try to release your brakes by providing the system pressure. If the shoes do not release, you know they’re frozen. To release, leave your trailer brakes released and gently rock the tractor front and back to break the connection. It may take a few tries but eventually the shoes will brake free!
Does anyone know the other old school trick to releasing frozen brakes? Tell us below!

“But I thought it’s automated..?”
Yes, many trucks on the road today are moving towards AUTOMATED manual transmissions and away from the traditional manual transmission. What does that mean? It is NOT an automatic like in a passenger vehicle. Rather, automated manuals use a combination of computers, sensors, and pneumatic systems to detect grade and wheel speed and then switch gears to that which is best suited for conditions.
Drivers can override the given gear and put the truck into a select gear as they see fit.
For your typical 12 speed, use:
1ST gear from stop under full load
3RD gear from stop if trailer is empty
5TH gear from stop if bobtailing

It may sound backwards but…
Tractor trailer brake systems are designed to stop a loaded trailer up to their specc’d weight — normally their 80,000lb standard operating limit here in the US. So although it sounds counterintuitive, trucks stop more effectively when they’re loaded than when they’re empty and an empty trailer isn’t providing as much downforce on the trailer or drive axles. Still ensure you’re allowing proper following distance as it may take longer to slow down, but keep that in mind, especially when in wintry conditions!

In case you didn’t know….
Braking, steering, and control of your vehicle varies GREATLY under different conditions. Perhaps that’s news to you, but you didn’t realize just how serious an issue it is. Crash data suggests that your chances of collision increase nearly 2.7x when driving on wet or low traction pavement.
1. Increase your following distance
2. Drive slower!
3. Don’t overestimate your ability. It’s not a race, it’s a mission — get there and get home.

You can’t avoid what you can’t see.
On average, headlights on commercial vehicles provide roughly 250’ of illumination when low beams are used. At highway speeds, a tractor trailer travels that distance in 2.62 second, leaving very little time to react in the face of danger.
Reduce your speed in areas of low visibility (curves, hills, blind spots) and instances that may impair visibility beyond that 250’ in front of you (heavy precipitation, fog, darkness). Times near dawn or dusk further impair visibility and depth perception.
There are enough threats inherent in life on the road, give yourself time to observe, react, and respond so you can get home safely.

Worried about someone messing with your load?
With cargo theft at record levels and hundreds of thousands of trucks parked over the holiday weekend, it’s easy to worry about jokesters pulling your fifth wheel or worse… stealing your freight and equipment.
This old truckers’ trick offers a simple fix — when parking for the night or weekend, apply your trailer brakes and roll gently forward. This puts tension on the kingpin and prevents any effort to pull the release handle!
