I checked the JW Marriott in Palm Desert for festival week 2027. One room for four people, Apr 7 to 14: $10,518, and that is before the 14% tax. The week that actually lines up with the festival was not bookable at all.

One building over, on the same resort campus, a timeshare owner is renting their studio for Apr 9 to 16. Two beds, kitchenette, patio, sleeps four. $1,887 for the week, $2,097 with parking. Same palm trees, same golf course.

Here is the trick: hotels reprice festival week nightly. An owner pays the same fixed fee whether their week lands on Coachella or a quiet June Tuesday, so their price never surges. That gap is $8,421 for the group.

One of this week's five getaway weeks costs less than half the going rate.

It is a New Year's ski week, Dec 25, 2026 to Jan 1, 2027. Priceline wants $6,313 for the week. The owner's rate for the exact same 2 bedroom is $2,499.

Why? Because it is a real timeshare rental. The owner owes maintenance fees whether they ski or not, so the unused week gets listed at the member rate. That is the third option most travelers never put in the comparison.

This week's five: Steamboat Springs in Colorado, St. John in the USVI, Park City in Utah, Phoenix in Arizona, and Palm Beach in Aruba. Two of them are December holiday weeks.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas is the hotel. The Ritz-Carlton Club, St. Thomas is the residence side, deeded to individual owners in fixed weeks. When an owner cannot travel, the whole week goes out at their number, not the hotel's.

I found one live right now. Ocean view two bedroom residence, four beds, two baths, full kitchen, Jan 16 to 23, 2027. The big rental sites want $12,304 for the same residence, same week. The owner's week is $8,988 with taxes in. That is $3,316 still in your pocket. A single hotel room on the other side of the gate ran $11,299 that same week.

Memorial Day week in Newport Beach. Sold out everywhere. Except it is not.

I tried to book Memorial Day 2027 on the coast like everyone else. Expedia had no rooms for the week. Booking.com had no availability, and its backup offer was $4,056 for four nights. Most people see that and give up, or pay it.

Here is what nobody tells you: this bluff top resort above the Pacific is a timeshare, so its villa weeks never enter the hotel booking pool at all. Every week already belongs to an owner. When an owner skips a year, a person prices the week to get it booked, not holiday demand software.

The one I found is live right now: Marriott's Newport Coast Villas, a two bedroom villa that sleeps eight, May 29 to Jun 5, 2027, $400 a night, $2,800 for all seven nights. Three more nights and $1,256 less than the four night backup.

Save this for the friend who plans the long weekend, because it is one owner's week, and once it books, it is gone.
