Progress on the I-45 widening project between FM 517 to FM 1764 in Galveston County continues as crews will be demolishing the old southbound section of the FM 517 Overpass. The work will begin Friday night May 30, 2025 at 9:00 PM and will be completed by Monday morning June 2, 2025 at 5:00 AM.
In order to complete this work the FM 517 intersection will be closed for the East Bound and West Bound traffic. This will then allow the contractor to start the final construction work for the new southbound main lanes of the new FM 517 Southbound Overpass.
The detour for the total closure for the eastbound traffic of FM 517 will be:
Turn right at the intersection of FM 517 and the southbound frontage road. Continue south on the southbound frontage road, Turn right onto Hughes Road and continue over the Hughes Road overpass. At the end of the bridge turn right to the northbound frontage road. Turn right and take the North Bound Frontage Road back to the FM 517 intersection.
The detour for the total closure for the westbound traffic of FM 517 will be:
Turn right at the intersection of FM 517 and the North Bound Frontage Road of I-45. Continue North on the North Bound Frontage Road and then use the North Bound to South Bound U-turn at FM 646. Continue on the South Bound Frontage Road to FM 517.
During the weekend closure, crews will be demolishing the West side of the existing bridge over the eastbound and westbound lanes of FM 517. Off duty police will be on site to assist with the traffic control.
ALSO - Crews will close one southbound lane of I-45 Gulf Freeway from Deats to Hughes in Dickinson starting Friday (May 29) at 9pm until Monday, June 2 at 5am.
This portion of the I-45 expansion project is anticipated to take approximately one and half years to complete. The I-45 expansion project between FM 517 to FM 1764 will improve mobility for motorists while reducing congestion and improving safety along this heavily traveled corridor. The corridor changes will also aid in facilitating the growth and development of Galveston County, and will provide the capacity to support the anticipated future growth of the surrounding communities.
The $230 million I-45 expansion project between FM 517 to FM 1764 is expected to be completed in winter 2026.
