A group of badass women (not all pictured) came together and decided they wanted to celebrate their indigenous culture in a big way. And after weeks of planning, all while still working, and raising children, and managing households, we had THREE DAYS of community and cultural events celebrating our families, our history, and our land.
A huge feast Fork Around and Find Out Collective with amazing traditional foods and a Native DJ. An open mic night and potluck at the sugarbush. A full day of native vendors, , singers, and on ceremonial land.
All 3 days had a great turnout with people coming from all over the state. I loved seeing youth, elders, and everyone in between working and playing together.
The city didn’t put this on for us. No big organization or company that couldn’t even bother to consult natives did this in a thinly veiled attempt to drum up attention for themselves did this. It wasn’t even a specific tribe. Nope. Just a group of women with a dream to bring the community together.
Despite the violence, oppression and objectification directed toward girls and women, Native women in particular, time and time again it is women stepping up and leading real change. Women create life. Women create community. Women create culture. Never forget.
