Last night, Mayor Mary Sheffield delivered her first State of the City address, marking a historic moment and a clear vision for Detroit’s future rooted in a neighborhood first approach.

From the Office of Mobility Innovation perspective, the mayor’s focus on transportation stood out as a key pillar in building more connected, equitable communities.

A major announcement included the launch of “Show Your ID, Ride for Free,” allowing all K to 12 Detroit students to ride the bus at no cost starting April 1, with reinvestment into afterschool programming. The city is also expanding transit infrastructure with 45 new buses already in service, 80 more on the way, and plans to improve rider experience through new benches and upgraded shelters.

These investments reflect a broader commitment to safe, reliable, and accessible mobility that supports students, families, and neighborhoods across Detroit. While led by the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT), this work is part of a shared, citywide effort to move Detroit forward.

We are proud to support and collaborate on mobility solutions that help residents access opportunity and stay connected to the places that matter most.

Earlier this month, at the Girls STEAM Summit at Michigan Central, Yonikka Tinsley and Naomi Okanlawon represented the Office of Mobility Innovation in a day designed to spark curiosity and confidence in 6th to 8th grade girls exploring STEAM.
Through hands on workshops, interactive exhibits, and conversations with real practitioners, students connected their interests to real world pathways. From building solar cars with DAPCEP to hearing from professionals like a traffic engineer working in the traffic management center, the experience made STEAM tangible and relevant.

With the support of volunteers, partners, and families, the summit created a welcoming and engaging environment where students could learn, explore, and begin to imagine their future.

Congratulations to Yonikka Tinsley, our MI Mobility Fellow, on completing her capstone with the Office of Mobility Innovation.

Her project, Grocery Mobility Hubs: Addressing Transportation Disadvantage and Food Access Inequity in Detroit, explores how transportation barriers and food access challenges overlap in Detroit’s historically disinvested neighborhoods, and proposes a publicly governed model for grocery mobility hubs supported by coordinated, temperature-controlled delivery.

We’re also excited to share that Yonikka has officially joined our team in a permanent role as Clean Fuels Specialist.

Thank you to the Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification for sponsoring the MI Mobility Fellowship and supporting emerging leaders advancing equitable, innovative mobility solutions across Michigan.
