Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals,
We have a lot to cover this week, so let's get started.
First things first, this week is Board Game Night! Come and play some fun board games with us! If you have a game you want to share with the club, feel free to bring it and we'd be happy to try it out with you!
Next, we have some exciting news! We're doing a collaboration with the Discovery Corps about Fandoms in Social Movements. Here's the description of the event:
"It’s a good time to be a geek. The highest grossing film series of all time are those of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and The Harry Potter franchises, and geek culture is more popular than ever. These series are becoming juggernauts in part because they generate fandoms, or fan communities. But how does an individual shift from a casual consumer of pop culture to “Fan with a capital F” who spends hours each week writing fan fiction or supporting charity work? Why, for example, did hundreds of thousands of k-pop (Korean popular music) fans support Black Lives Matter by taking over whites supremacist hashtags on twitter in the summer of 2020? Fans are creating communities (fandoms) around a love of the characters or story of a particular pop culture product. They then seek to embody the values espoused by these characters in the real world by engaging in charity work or social action. Through case studies of the most active fandoms, we learn that fans are not just passionate consumers. Instead, fans are becoming a political force to be reckoned with.
Join us on Feb 25th via Zoom or in person, where Tanya Cook, PhD, will Zoom in to discuss why and how fans are more politically engaged than ever, and why fandom increasingly looks like a social movement. Cook will present results from a multi-year ethnographic study and preview some highlights of her forthcoming book (with research partner Kaela Joseph) Fandom Acts of Kindness: A Heroic Guide to Activism, Advocacy, and Doing Chaotic Good."
If you're interested in coming, RSVP here: https://cglink.me/2fC/r1480534 for either Zoom or in-person. We're super excited about it and we'd love to see you all there!
We'd also like to remind you about the Harm Prevention Training Workshop. It's online on February 18th from 12pm-1:30pm. We really need as many of you there as possible so we can be allowed to re-register. You can RSVP here: https://cglink.me/2fC/r1428151.
Finally, another reminder about board nominations! We're still accepting nominations for our board positions of President, Vice President, and Treasurer. Send us an email or a message if you want to run!
Okay, that's everything. We'll see you on Thursday at 7pm in CCOM 2600. Have a good week 6!
