Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals!

Let Fandoms Club be the 437th person to welcome you to Spring Quarter 2022! We would have been the first, but this email got delayed in shipping. Sorry about that.

That said, this week we'll be voting on what to do for the rest of the quarter and watching the Dreamworks movie Rise of the Guardians.

We'll be voting right at the beginning of club, so make sure to come on time if you want to get your suggestions in and have a say!

On a related note, we'll be meeting today (Thursday) at 7pm in Community Commons Room 2600.

We can't wait to see you there for our usual fun and hijinks!

And as always, don't forget that we do, in fact, have a Discord server (https://discord.gg/VegvbTr)! I mean, what the heck even is that?!?!?!? I guess you'll just have to check it out and see.

Check out the DU Fandoms Club community on Discord - hang out with 42 other members and enjoy free voice and text chat.

Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals!

This week is Glow Stick Night! Come and vibe with us while we... wear glow sticks. To be honest, this week is designed for everyone to come and unwind during the stress of finals. So feel free to come to club and do whatever, whether that be playing games, drawing, just chatting, it's up to you, but we'd be happy to have you.

That said, thank you all so much for the quarter, especially those of you who have stuck with us. We know that our consistent membership has been dwindling, but we really appreciate those of you who come every week. We're planning on restructuring a little bit to make the club more based around actual fandoms, so you can all look forward to that!

This will be our last email of the quarter, so if you can't make it Thursday, we'll see you in the spring!

As always, we'll be in Community Commons 2600 at 7pm on Thursday. Hopefully we'll be able to brighten up your week 10.

Feel free to come hang out with us on our Discord: https://discord.gg/VegvbTr.

Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals,

We have a couple things going on this week! To start, we have our collab with the Discovery Corps, "Fandoms in Social Movements." It's in Community Commons room 2600 on Friday from 2-4pm. We're super excited about it, and we hope that we can see you all there! You can find all the details here:

It’s a good time to be a geek. The highest grossing film series of all time are those of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and The Harry Potter franchises, and geek culture is more popular than ever. These series are becoming juggernauts in part because they generate fandoms, or fan communities. But how does an individual shift from a casual consumer of pop culture to “Fan with a capital F” who spends hours each week writing fan fiction or supporting charity work? Why, for example, did hundreds of thousands of k-pop (Korean popular music) fans support Black Lives Matter by taking over whites supremacist hashtags on twitter in the summer of 2020? Fans are creating communities (fandoms) around a love of the characters or story of a particular pop culture product. They then seek to embody the values espoused by these characters in the real world by engaging in charity work or social action. Through case studies of the most active fandoms, we learn that fans are not just passionate consumers. Instead, fans are becoming a political force to be reckoned with.

Join us on Feb 25th via Zoom or in person, where Tanya Cook, PhD, will Zoom in to discuss why and how fans are more politically engaged than ever, and why fandom increasingly looks like a social movement. Cook will present results from a multi-year ethnographic study and preview some highlights of her forthcoming book (with research partner Kaela Joseph) Fandom Acts of Kindness: A Heroic Guide to Activism, Advocacy, and Doing Chaotic Good. Register here: https://cglink.me/2fC/r1480534

As far as our regular meeting, this week is Star Trek Night! Bring suggestions for what Star Trek episodes you want to watch with the club, any incarnation is fair game! (My favorite is the one where Han Solo goes through the Star Gate to save the Battlestar Galactica).

Hopefully we'll see you there!

If you didn't like how I intentionally mixed up Star Trek with 3 other popular sci-fi series, then you should join our Discord, since we make sure to get it right there: https://discord.gg/VegvbTr.

We'll be meeting on Thursday at 7pm in CCOM 2600! If you're not a chicken (or if you are, since it is your day night), we'll see you there!

I would say you'd join the Discord server if you're not a chicken, but let's be honest, everyone in our Discord server is a chicken. (https://discord.gg/VegvbTr)

Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals!

This week is Nature Documentary Night! Come and learn some things about [insert part of nature here] with us! Bring your suggestions for documentaries to watch!

Also!!!!! Don't forget about the Harm Prevention Workshop. It'll be online on February 18th from 12pm-1:30pm. You can RSVP here: https://cglink.me/2fC/r1428151. It's really important that everyone goes to a harm prevention workshop, or else our club won't be allowed to re-register next year.

Also, don't forget about our elections! If you want to nominate yourself or someone else than let us know! The positions you can nominate yourself for are President, Vice President, and Treasurer. If you have any questions about the different positions, ask any member of the board, we'd be happy to answer them!

As usual, we'll be meeting on Thursday at 7pm in CCOM 2600. See you there!

Now come and watch the wild Discord server in it's natural habitat (https://discord.gg/VegvbTr).

Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals!

This week we're opening nominations for next year's Fandoms Club board! Feel free to nominate yourself or someone else for one (or more) of our board positions, just message the board, ! Here are the descriptions for each one:

President - The President leads the club and board, and ensures that both run smoothly. They run the weekly meetings, and they take a lead role in making sure that everyone feels safe and comfortable in club. They're in charge of any contact with other clubs and organizations (for collaborations) and they're responsible for renewing the club each year.

Vice President - The Vice President's role is to support the other board members. They help the other board members wih their tasks when they're overwhelmed, and they're charge of making sure everything gets done on time. They're also tasked with booking the room for the club, and need to communicate with the Treasurer to make sure the club has whatever materials are needed for each meeting (ex. pencils and pencil crayons for a drawing night, glow sticks for glow stick night, etc).

Treasurer - The Treasurer is responsible for managing club funds. This includes keeping track of the club's total and current remaining budget, reaching out to the Student Comptroller or USG Finance when necessary, reserving the P-card for club purchases, and making sure that the club doesn't run out of money.

Even if you're only considering it, we encourage you to try and run for a position! It's a lot of fun, and we'd love to have you! Also, just in case you're worried about not being qualified, you don't need to be! We plan to start training everyone who gets elected right away, and we'll continue training them until the end of the year so they'll be ready to take over.

If you have any more questions about the elections, the officer positions, or anything else, feel free to reach out to any of the board members, or send them in an email to [email protected].

As for this week's meeting, it's Matrix Trilogy Night! We'll be trying to make it through as much of the original three Matrix movies as we can, so feel free to come by and hang out!

We'll be meeting in-person this week! We'll be in the Community Commons in Room 2600 at 7pm.

We can't wait to see you there!

Hey Guys, Gals, and Non-Binary Pals!

This week is Joey Let's Play Night! We'll be choosing games from our president, Joey's Steam library and watching him either fail horribly or succeed spectacularly at them! He has no say over what games we make him play or what difficulty settings he'll be playing on, so if you want to have a say, come drop in!

Because of COVID restrictions, we'll be online in our Discord server again this week. We're meeting at 7pm, so don't be late! (Or do. Live your life and do what you want, who am I to judge?)

Hopefully we'll see you there!

We'll be meeting in CCOM 2600 at 7pm tonight.

Hopefully you'll be there!
