Jay Makled
2020- Present: Financial Secretary Local 600. Jay Makled was elected to Financial Secretary of Local 600 in 2020. Jay has been union activist and a
fighter for social justice since he joined the UAW. As Financial Secretary, Jay’s duties consist of
maintaining a balance budget, overseeing membership dues, and servicing assignments of Local 600
represented units. His career with the UAW started in 1996, where he was hired at the Ford Sheldon Rd. He was
then transferred to the Dearborn Diversified Manufacturing Plant in 2007 through the collective
bargaining agreement. Jay has held numerous elected positions, has extensive negotiation experience and continuing labor
education. Jay was first elected in 2003 to District Committee, Bargaining Rep 2006 – 2007, Bargaining
Rep 2010 – 2013 and Vice President / Bargaining 2013 -2015, Convention delegate 2018, served on the
convention credentials committee and Plant Chairman of DDMP 2015 – 2020. In addition, Jay has a passion for labor education and has studied at Wayne State, MSU, and U of M
Labor Studies. He is currently chairing the education committee at Local 600, where he assists Local 600
members in furthering their labor education. Jay resides in the Metro Detroit area, where he is raising his two daughters and is an active part of the
community.

On this day in 1970, Walter Reuther, his wife May, and four others were tragically killed in a plane crash in Pellston, Michigan. Today, we remember Brother Reuther as a visionary and principled leader whose fierce commitment to the labor movement helped build a better life for countless working-class people.
