San Diego, you have my heart! ♥️

After 19 days at Pio Pico, we’ve moved north a bit. I didn’t do a great job sharing our outings but we have enjoyed our time here immensely. (And we’ll be back in November!! 😍)

On Saturday, we went to the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California. This grand old lady has long been on my list of hotels to go see—and she did not disappoint!

Built in 1887/1888 (depending on which plaque you read), she is marvelous today. But can you imagine how grand she must have felt, brand-new, 138 years ago?

Oh, and did I mention the hotel is right on a beach??? 🏖️

Our current location is on the outskirts of sunny San Diego, nestled in a campground in the canyon of Otay Mountain (elev. 3,491 feet). To get here, we dipped to -41 feet below sea level and crested at about 4,450 feet above. It was a roller coaster (up-down-up-down-up) ride to get here. We began in arid desert climate, drove through a sand dune (whaaat??), and ended up in a valley (640 feet above sea level) surrounded by greenery and wildlife.

We are stopped off in Quartzsite, Arizona before venturing into California tomorrow. It’s the “off season” here so the population of Quartzsite is around 2,400. During their busy season, this area swells by 750,000 to 2 million (though, thankfully, not all at once).

We toured around the little town today and found the little cemetery with the resting place of Hi Jolly. The backstory: In 1856, the U.S. Army imported over 70 camels to test their viability for transporting freight and troops across the arid deserts of the Southwest. Hadji Ali, an Ottoman citizen of Greek and Syrian descent, was hired as the chief camel wrangler. Because his name was difficult for American soldiers to pronounce, they affectionately called him "Hi Jolly".

When the Civil War broke out, the Army abandoned the camel experiment and set the animals free. (Whaaaaaat??? 😦) Hi Jolly stayed behind. He tried running a freighting business, worked as a U.S. Army scout during the Geronimo campaign, and lived out his days prospecting. In 1880, he became a U.S. citizen under his birth name, Philip Tedro. He married a local woman and had two children.

Hi Jolly passed away in Quartzsite on December 16, 1902. Locals built a unique pyramidal tomb for him out of petrified wood and quartz, which was later topped with a copper camel.

We did an early Mother’s Day at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village in Sedona is a charming, Mexican-village-inspired complex known for its art galleries, unique boutiques, and restaurants, featuring cobblestone paths, fountains, and shade trees.

Construction of the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village in Sedona began in 1971 and was completed in 1978. It first opened to the public in 1973. Designed to look like a centuries-old village in Jalisco, Mexico, it was developed by Abe Miller to be a haven for artists, featuring cobblestone paths, vine-covered walls, arched entryways, and sycamore trees.

It offers a wide variety of Southwestern and eclectic art, jewelry, crafts, and home decor, alongside dining options from casual to fine cuisine, making it a popular destination for shopping and strolling.

There is a relaxed international vibe that we thoroughly enjoyed. We indulged in some Mexican food for lunch, had a chai latte and some Turkish coffee, and the kiddos got their first henna tattoos.

And if art galleries are your thing, Tlaquepaque is definitely worth a visit. There are galleries throughout the village but, essentially, the entire village is a gallery. The bronze statues used as part of the landscape are all for sale!

Side note: Today’s high temperature was 94° but Tlaquepaque is so well laid out, that there are shade spots everywhere and the heat is never unbearable.

It’s one of my favorite sayings about Arizona, so of course I had to get the sticker! 🤣“It’s a dry heat.”

The teal McDonalds in Sedona, Arizona. 🙂

AI Info Compilation:
The only McDonald's in the world with teal (turquoise) arches is located at 2380 W State Route 89A in Sedona, Arizona.

Established in 1993, these unique arches were mandated by city officials to blend with the natural red rock landscape, replacing the traditional bright yellow with a color that complements the Southwest environment.

Strict city building codes designed to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the surrounding red rock environment prohibited the standard bright yellow. In addition to the turquoise "M," the building features a more subdued, adobe-colored exterior to blend into the surroundings.

It is a major tourist stop for photos in Sedona. The original, now-retired yellow arches from this location are on display at the Sedona Heritage Museum.
