We visited the Michigan state capitol building in Lansing.

The first capital building was in Detroit in 1837. The state moved it to Lansing in 1847. A new building was constructed in 1873 and completed in 1879 and the design takes its inspiration from the National Capital in Washington D.C.

Located on the 2nd and 3rd floors are the Gallery of Governors - portraits of previous Governors.

Detroit, Michigan is our next destination.

Our first stop was a visit to Michigan State University (MSU) - home of the Spartans. Both of my parents were alumni and met during their time there. I wanted to take a tour since I wouldn’t be here without the school 😉!

Founded in 1855, MSU was the first school to teach scientific agriculture, received 14,000 acres of state-owned land and was called Agriculture College of the State of Michigan.

The university mascot is named Sparty, who represents a Greek warrior and the school colors are green and white. Notable alumni include basketball star Magic Johnson and actor James Caan. Current student enrollment is 52,000.

Our new destination is Lake Leelanau, Michigan.

Our first stop was a quaint summer resort called Fountain Point Resort.

Fountain Point Resort got its name in 1867 when Frenchman Aymar De Belloy decided to drill for oil on land he purchased in Lake Leelanau. After a long struggle and close to complete failure, he struck a gusher of sparkling water at a depth of 900 feet. The sparkling water has flowed ever since. It was designated a National Registry of Historic Places in 2003.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is located on a remote point known as “Shipwreck Coast” of Lake Superior. It shares grounds with the Whitefish Point Light Tower, which has shined continuously since 1861 and is the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior.

The museum houses the recovered bronze bell from the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and shipwreck artifacts.

Tahquamenon Falls are in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Upper Falls drop 50 feet and span over 200 feet, making them one of the largest waterfalls east of Mississippi River. The flow rates can reach up to 50,000 gallons per second. The Lower Falls are 4 miles downstream.

The root beer color comes from natural tannins leached from cedar and spruce swamps.

A few sights around St. Ignace.

St. Anthony’s Rock - is one of several “sea stacks” in the Straits area. It is made of Mackinac breccia, a stone formed 350 million years ago. Previously known as Goudreau Rock, St. Anthony’s Rock is located in downtown St. Ignace.

During the summer, fireworks go off every Saturday night over the harbor.

As part of the Sleeping Dunes National Lakeshore, The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is 7.4 miles loop with beautiful views of Lake Michigan, the Glen Lakes, and the Dunes and has 12 stops along the way.

We came back to the park at later in the evening to view the beautiful sunset at the Lake Michigan Overlook.
