The state capital of Ohio is located in Columbus, the last stop of our summer rv trip.

The state capital is the 3rd building for the state of Ohio, with construction starting in 1839 and completion date of 1861 with a total budget of $1.3 million dollars. The statehouse is built in the Greek Revival style. The limestone used for the construction is from Columbus from the West Bank of the Scioto River.

President Abraham Lincoln visited the statehouse on 3 separate occasions. A painting depicting Ohioans in Space pays homage to John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell, and Judy Resnick.

A special 9/11 display was on the lawn with 2,977 flags honored an American life that was lost that day.

About 20 miles south of Decatur, Indiana is a town called Berne.

Founded in 1852 by Swiss Mennonite immigrants, the city is named after Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The area features a large Amish population that speaks Bernese German rather than Pennsylvania Dutch.

The Muensterberg Plaza and Clock Tower features a 160-foot clock tower serving as a cultural symbol of the town.

Berne is widely known as the “Furniture Capital of Indiana”.

We are at REV Service Center in Decatur, Indiana to get our RV serviced. We come here once a year to get warranty work done. For the more unglamorous side of rv life, we had to get new batteries installed, get our superslide fixed, our dryer fixed and an electrical issue addressed.

Luckily, our extended warranty covered the issue with the dryer as it needed a new drum part.

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is the largest indoor-outdoor museum in the U.S. Dedicated on October 21, 1929 by Thomas Edison, the museum features exhibits from manufacturing, automotive and American innovation.

Some highlights of the museum include Abraham Lincoln’s chair from Ford’s Theatre, Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park laboratory, authentic Rosa Parks bus and presidential limousines.

A special exhibition titled “Fabric of America: Our fashions, textiles and technologies” explored the connections between style, innovation and American history.

We took a tour of the Ford Rouge Factory where the Ford F-150’s trucks are made.

Opened in 1917, the complex was envisioned by Henry Ford as a self-contained manufacturing marvel where raw materials entered and finished vehicles rolled out.

There is an observation deck that looks out to one of the world’s largest living, eco-friendly roofs that naturally insulates the facility and manages millions of gallons of storm water.

We walked the plant walkway to see the assembly line of parts for the F-150’s - no photography was allowed.

Detroit is host to Ford Field, where the Detroit Lions play football and Coamerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers play baseball.

We visited the Michigan state capitol building in Lansing.

The first capital building was in Detroit in 1837. The state moved it to Lansing in 1847. A new building was constructed in 1873 and completed in 1879 and the design takes its inspiration from the National Capital in Washington D.C.

Located on the 2nd and 3rd floors are the Gallery of Governors - portraits of previous Governors.

Detroit, Michigan is our next destination.

Our first stop was a visit to Michigan State University (MSU) - home of the Spartans. Both of my parents were alumni and met during their time there. I wanted to take a tour since I wouldn’t be here without the school 😉!

Founded in 1855, MSU was the first school to teach scientific agriculture, received 14,000 acres of state-owned land and was called Agriculture College of the State of Michigan.

The university mascot is named Sparty, who represents a Greek warrior and the school colors are green and white. Notable alumni include basketball star Magic Johnson and actor James Caan. Current student enrollment is 52,000.
