New hand hammered art by my brother Robert at Coppersmith Pointe!
Traditionally, loggerhead sea turtle shells were displayed in homes along the southeastern coast. Unlike shells from the more commercially valuable hawksbill turtle—the source of genuine “tortoiseshell”—loggerhead shells were generally kept as trophies, much like mounted fish.
The shells were often byproducts of a time when sea turtles were harvested for food. They became a form of natural decoration during an era when attitudes toward wildlife and conservation were very different from those of today.
Loggerhead sea turtles are now protected under the Endangered Species Act, making it illegal to take or newly acquire their shells except under limited authorized circumstances.
For some, this hand-hammered copper replica will evoke memories of Grandpa’s fish camp and a bygone era of life along the southeastern coast.
