“Our final reflection on our days at the airport following Hurricane Helene is all about the people.
The pilots, the people behind the scenes, the volunteers, and the friendships we made.
The efforts at our local county airport were only possible because of the pilots willing to donate their time, their fuel, and their planes. Many made multiple trips over the week and a half, and some multiple trips in a single day. They welcomed us and our kids to sit in their planes and to ask all the questions and to take all the pictures. One pilot let our youngest son ride with him down the tarmac to the fueling station, and our son helped him refuel the plane. Back and forth over our mountains they delivered not only what was needed most, but also hope.” …

A year after Helene the impacts of community and resilience still ripple through the WNC mountains.

For the Readers who have been asking what kind of helicopter just flew through Macon County and near the Macon County Airport, it is a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter. The flight originated from Donaldson Center in Greenville, SC and some low passes down the runway and one touch and go. It did the same thing at the Toccoa Airport and (as I wrote this, is doing the same at the Jackson County Airport).

This is a normal training exercise. We live in the Snowbird MOA (Military Operations Area). The flight callsign is HAIRY02. A screenshot of one of the passes from one of the Macon County Airport webcams is shared with this post. You can see the webcams at https://maconcountyairport.com/webcamera/
